We have been visiting this place for over 10 years. The quality of food has gone down. It's not as good as it used to be but overall still good food. We visited yesterday and the experience was terrible. We placed our order with the server, in our order we asked for chicken wings. He brought us an order of half fried chicken. We told him we ordered chk wings, he hesitated but eventually took it back to the kitchen. We went to the cash to pay our bill and the owner (she sits at the cash all the time) charged us for chk wings, which we didn't receive. She told us it's coming (after we were finished eating and our food were all packed in boxes). She then told us we changed our order and we have to wait for chk wings (which we didn't, he put in the wrong order) instead of removing it from our bill they made sure we were charged for it. We told them this is insane don't lose a customer over chk wings. She said it was our fault.. anyways we paid the bill which was $185 and left no tip because of the service and her attitude. While waiting for the chk wings, she goes on to say we complained because we didn't want to leave a tip. This audacity of this woman is unbelievable. This was the least amount our bill has ever come to in this place. Usually our bill is around $300-$500 each time and we leave a 30% tip everytime. We will never return, rather take our money elsewhere and support businesses that appreciate our hard working money. Even the servers and other staff was looking at her shaking their heads bc they know we are regulars and sever us all the time. A staff from the back came out to the front and said she's wrong she should admit when she's wrong and apologize. The server that served us apologized and said he's sorry the mistake. Which is fine, we appreciate the apology from him but unfortunately it was her (the owners) attitude and mannerism that will make us never return. We would always visit emerald Chinese and this place, after this we would recommend emerald 1000%. We've never been treated this poorly before. She didn't seem to care much, hands were throwing up in the air and she said whatever go emerald and left while we're speaking to her and went to the back. The attitude was unbearable for an owner. Your staff don't even speak to people like that so you definitely shouldn't as an OWNER. Mind you all of this over chk wings and no tip? It makes you wonder if these servers are even given their...
Read moreThe man working here will yell at you and try to lay his hands on a woman when you ask for your change.
Before I explain what happened this morning, I have to preface this by saying the service here is subpar and that is to be expected at these dim sum restaurants. The servers are rude and have absolutely no customer service skills or even serving skills. They also don't know what’s on the menu so don’t bother asking questions about the dishes.
Here’s my experience that will ensure I will never step foot again in this establishment: my bill came to $70.25. I handed the man in a black jacket $80.25 in cash because if you pay by cash, they charge less per dish (they do this so they pay less taxes, duh). I was anticipating on tipping 15% as I usually do for standard service — although I found 15% to be more than generous with the treatment my dad and I received from their staff. When I gave the man the cash, i expected him to give me back my change as you would at any other restaurant. However, he didn’t, so I asked if I can have two $5 bills back because I needed smaller bills and was going to tip with a $10 bill and a $1 coin. The man becomes aggressive and said tip was not included in the bill. I said, I know, but I want change back so I can tip. He suddenly starts yelling at me saying that I need to tip at least 12% — that’s when I became even more disappointed with the service because 1) it’s not a law to tip 12%, and 2) why are you yelling at me? I didn’t say I wasn’t going to tip and if I were to tip 12%, that’s only $8.43 which is less than the $10 change they owed me — therefore, I still should’ve gotten my change. He starts to argue with me that I HAVE TO tip at least 12% and I looked at him straight and said that’s not the law and do not speak to me this way. He finally says “ok fine here” and gives me my two $5 bills and at that point I only left $5 because this man is literally yelling at me in front of the entire restaurant. I’m still waiting for a takeout dish so I’m standing at the cash area and then he yells at me “go sit” and tried pushing me with his right arm in the direction of my table but I quickly stepped back and I told him to not touch me. I will never be back here again and I will not recommend this...
Read moreHad been to this place a couple of times in the past. I am sure it was my last time dining here today. I don’t get how Sam Woo gets survived and keeps its business.
Food impressions ~ frozen food bought from grocery stores reheated or microwaved in its kitchen is served on tables. My husband ordered fish ball with rice noodle soup. It was still frozen inside and not completely cooked when got to our table. Two other dishes, steamed dumplings and chicken feet, were completely plain and tasteless.
Dine-in surroundings impressions ~ No decorations are around and tables are dated and are set over crowded.
Service impressions ~ seriously, there are no customer skills at all from its owner to waiters in Sam Woo. Services are absolutely horrible and super rude. This afternoon, while my husband was placing orders, I went to takeout counter to buy a roast duck. I had waited for ten minutes, without anyone in front of me, to get attention. Then the man asked me which one I wanted so I pointed to it and told him. He didn’t hear, then starting yelling at me. So I went to its boss and its boss told me she was not the boss and the boss was not on site as she didn’t want to hear and deal with the complaint, I guess. As my husband and daughter had finished the order and dishes started come to table, I thought I would let it be our last dining here. One dish was arriving uncooked. Calling its waiters got ignored and finally got a lady to cancel it. Then I over heard a staff saying in Cantonese that the returned one could be served to other table if was uneaten. The lady who was appearing to be its boss demanded for cash payment claiming only cash payment for special dim sum, and she was not even willingly giving me receipt for my cash payment until I firmly requested it, making me suspect her not submitting HST and dodging income tax. I wonder if any CRA agent would see my review and Sam Woo should get seriously tax audited. I usually tip for 15%, sometimes 10% even for not-so-great services, as I understand that waiters work for tips. Today in Sam Woo, I paid for full bill of food and zero tips for service and clearly told them why. And that was it.
Overall, I want to give Sam Woo zero rating and won’t...
