As a longtime regular of La Bête à Pain Ahuntsic, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve walked through its doors—always greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries. This bakery has become a cornerstone of my routine, and for good reason. Nestled in Ahuntsic, it’s a rare spot that effortlessly combines the charm of a neighborhood bakery with the heart of a bustling café.
The viennoiseries alone are worth the visit. Think buttery, flaky croissants that shatter delicately with each bite, or pain au chocolat with its rich, molten core—these staples are executed to perfection. Their baguette is a masterpiece, with a crust that crackles and a tender, airy interior that embodies classic French baking. Beyond the basics, their rotating selection of breads adds excitement, from rustic loaves to inventive seasonal creations.
The brunch menu is a highlight, offering hearty, thoughtfully prepared dishes that rotate to showcase fresh, local ingredients. It’s the kind of meal that feels both indulgent and satisfying, perfect for lazy weekends. And yes, you absolutely cannot miss their quiche—its silky filling and golden, buttery crust are the stuff of legends. Even their pizzas, with their perfectly chewy crust and creative flair, are a delightful surprise.
What truly sets La Bête à Pain apart is its dedication to community and quality. The shelves are lined with locally sourced wines, ciders, and artisanal products, making it easy to support Quebec producers while treating yourself. The staff radiates warmth and professionalism, always ready with a smile or recommendation, even during the busiest rushes. Accessibility is also thoughtfully addressed, with a wheelchair-friendly entrance and spacious layout ensuring everyone feels welcome.
While the space can feel cozy, especially near the entrance, the lively atmosphere and inviting energy make it part of the charm. Minor quirks, like playful twists on classic pastries, only add character to an otherwise flawless experience.
In a city brimming with bakeries, La Bête à Pain Ahuntsic stands out as a place where passion and craftsmanship meet everyday comfort. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee and croissant, picking up a loaf of bread, or settling in for a leisurely brunch, it’s a spot that consistently delivers—and keeps loyal patrons like me coming back, month...
Read moreGood food. Seriously , if you come on time. You don’t come on time. Too bad, I understand. I missed out on breakfast. Life will go on. For instance they serve breakfast 8-11 on the nose (like old skool places) got it. Then their lunch menus starts in thirty minutes. Ok no problem , “can I order in advance” because you start your lunch menu starts at 11:30. “Oh no you can’t mam in fifteen minutes “. So this nit wit cannot write down on a little piece of paper and charge me and come bring it in 30 minutes or whatever. I understand policy etc from the owner. But now the logic is out the door. But as I walk away, I hear laughter. So that in itself provoked me to write this review. Horrible customer service or selective. That said the owner should reconsider the way he serves his menu. Because 90% of other restaurants aren’t this stupid with their serving times. I came in 11:09, and had no problem missing the delicious breakfast. But why can’t you take my name and start the order in thirty. How hard was that . So read carefully. And judge as you wish. But as a customer I’m turned off from coming back here for a...
Read moreThis was highly recommended by a friend who grew up in France as being the closest to the real taste.
The place has a real rustic feel to it which works perfectly with their baked good. The smell of fresh baked goods can be smelled down the street which is very inviting.
I tried their croissants, chocolatine, baguette, pain de champagne and eclairs. I was very satisfied with the croissants, they were perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I was not a fan of the chocolatine because it was very soft inside out, but I am unsure if this is how they're supposed to taste so I can't fault them for this.
I will say however that I was not a fan of the eclairs, and again this might be my lack of knowledge of authentic eclairs, but it had chocolate on the inside instead of cream. If that's the authentic version then you can rate this a 5 instead of 4.
The baguette was very good. The croissant will be my go to next time I come, and at only $2 it...
