The name of the establishment should be Poisonerie Espadon.
Let me take you on a tale of New Year's Day. Shortly after a dramatic change to sanitary restrictions, a captive clientele resorted to ordering on Skip from an episcinery wonderland, Poissonerie Espadon, that the service insisted could offer both a delectable diet and direct delivery.
Everything began in the most agreeable manner: the menu promised items suited to the palate of both your humble bard and her somewhat culinarily cowardly spouse; the winged messengers of Mercury himself pledged their troth that the desired comestibles would grace our modest table forthwith; and, lo, a blessed bounty of user reviews assured that for every dissatisfied curmudgeon, fully nineteen peers gleefully devoured their dinner.
Little did we know that New Year's was in danger.
The order arrived as planned, the loyal disciple of Hermes defying rain, wind, and the Ghost of Christmas Future himself, to deposit the bounty at our doorstep. Upon opening the anticipated package, however, all was far from sanguine.
The order had been, as far as these things may be, straightforward. Two meals: a platter of sardines pour moi; and a far less adventurous fish burger trio for my husband. The delivered meal, alas, omitted this second element entirely. As my husband wept for want of a white fish patty, I reached for my phone, certain that at the height of this season of good will all could be swiftly rectified. Alas, dear reader, such was not to be our fate.
The gentleman who answered the call was, understandably, busy. Less understandably, his opening gambit was to gaslight your humble auteure. "Forsooth, why dost thou call upon me? Thy meal is yet in our frier!" Nonplussed was I, gazing at a very much cooked and delivered, if slightly maudlin, sardine platter.
"Gadzooks, nay, sirrah - for it arrived at my door not five minutes hence! But only a portion, not the whole, and my husband is inconsolable!"
"Call Skip and bleugh~"
Thus concluded our discourse, but not our drama.
Determined that this sorry situation should not sully our seasonal spirit, my husband insisted that I make my repast. “Nay, wife, my misfortune must not mar an otherwise agreeable (within the bounds of lockdown) holiday! Prithee sit, lest thy sardines take on an intemperate chill.”
And sit I did, dear reader, and sampled the much-vaunted fish. Lamentation, friend! Woe, and lamentation, for the flavour of the fish had yet more in common with a rabid rodent’s armpit hair than the ocean’s blessed bounty. Verily, they tasted as though canned sardines had been callously ejected into a deep fat fryer and left to winter there. So with the fries which, far from golden and delicious, tasted as though they had been sieved with sardine oil. Even the rice, dear reader, had a most disagreeable aspect.
Thus it was that, as I inhaled fruit juice to salvage what remained of my sense of taste, briefly wishing that sudden-onset Covid symptoms might spare me the worst of the experience, a meal which cost over $50 became little more than compost. A paltry sacrifice to Poseidon, or perhaps rather a sacrilege. Beware, thou, dear reader. Beware.
Highly recommend a blind delivery to your...
