Heard from a Chinese friend that this place has own chefs to make dim sum so we came to try. It’s interesting that they still keep the old tradition to have carts pushing dim sum for you to choose which turns out to be the only upside of this place. The down side? Here you go:
RUDE service by the table unworthy for any tips: All ladies pushing the dim sum cart were nice and friendly, but not the waiter who served our table. I asked for a high chair for my baby when we first came in, and then another guy came to serve our table so I asked for it again as I thought the waiter was changed. In the end, the first waiter came back with a high chair while we already had one, and he immediately snapped at me aloud and said “Stop asking this from everyone!” You need to go to pay at the counter by yourself when you leave the restaurant so I did with tips. However, after I paid and came back to the table to pack our stuff, another waiter who never showed up at our table threw a small tray on our table and said “Leave your tips here!”. And then he just stood by our table and starred at us without showing a slight gesture of courtesy. I left more tips AGAIN and then he grabbed it and walked away without saying a word. Voila, such a “great and welcoming” service provided by their waiters.
Mediocre dim sum but and pricy Their dim sums have many varieties but most of them is either too salty or the dough is too thick like those steamed dumplings and fried dishes. You can get similar quality of takeaway dim sum in Chinatown but at half a price cheaper than here.
Hygiene Similar to most Chinese restaurants, this place is again not entirely cleaned with a stale smell spreading the whole place.
Will we come again?...
Read moreOn a summer vacation visiting my mom & sister from also my nephew & his LARGE family also in town from Toronto, we came to Tong Por for a family dinner.
As it was on the eve of Ste Jean Baptiste Day holiday in Quebec, the restaurant was not as crowded on a Monday night - as people are traveling or camping.
We were given a large table with rotation capability for easy food access by everyone, We ordered:
Cantonese Stewed Brisket w/ Daikon Sweet & Sour Pork Chops Deep Fried Salt & Pepper Tofu Cubes " Salt & Pepper Fired Chicken Beef & Gailan in Oyster Sauce Black Bean Steamed Fish Crispy Cantonese Chow Mein
The food took a little bit time to come out of the kitchen, but once the first one arrived, the rest came rather quickly in succession. This is a Cantonese restaurant, which is one of our preferred Chinese cuisines, so they were very genuine & delicious. The service was quite good, as we (the visitors from. Toronto & California) happened to hit a heat spell in Montreal; temperature outside was in the high 35°C+, so they gave us a water pitcher with plenty of ice in it so no need to bother them constantly with a large party of 10 people.
In summary, Ville St Laurent used to have quite a few options when it comes to Chinese cuisines - avoiding the need to drive to Montreal Chinatown & parking headaches, however, due to the current economy and past COVID consequences, Tong Por is miraculously still serving St Laurent & its vicinity. So, if like us, you're craving for some yummy Cantonese cuisines & not wanting to bother fighting the traffic, give...

Went this past Sat. Place was mobbed. Dim sum was first class. Soumai was moist, full of pork and ground shrimp with a transperant skin, sticky rice and chicken feet were hot and tasty while spareribs were meaty in their black bean sauce. After the lengthy customer restrictions from the pandemic, it was nice to see the big dining room full and vibrant.
Addition Oct 25 I felt compelled to make an update. Today the dim sum was outstanding. Eating alone my sample had to be a narrow one. The tripe, liver and turnip was delicious. Moist and chewy, I enjoyed and applauded that the different elements of Now Jap in their serving chariot were separate as opposedto being in one prearranged mixture. The spareribs in black bean sauce were somewhat unique So much meat around each piece, chewy and garlic tasting. The sumai( steamed pork and shrimp) dumplings were as good as I have ever sampled including those eaten in Hong Kong . Light, buttery, virtual no thick, floured skin and brilliant texture, I almost brought a second order home in an act of indulgence. The three items described cost $23 before taxes up 40% from several years ago but in the moment worth every penny according to my...
