Halibut House Fish & Chips — Restaurant in New Tecumseth

We called for takeout, they said it would be ready in 10mins. I showed up 20mins after the phone order and had to wait 5mins. Which is fine at least we received hot fresh food. They also apologized for the wait and thanked me for waiting. The staff is very friendly, polite and welcoming. We ordered a halibut & chips & a halibut and onion rings. The batter on the fish was good, light and crispy. The thick cut fries were also good but needed salt. The onion rings were the best part, crispy, thin and flavourful. I thought the order came with coleslaw since I saw plates being served and they had a side of the salad. We did not receive coleslaw which was disappointing. The bill was about $38 and we feel that it is overpriced considering the portion you get. Which is only one piece of fish and couple of handfuls of fries or onion rings. The packaged ketchup, malt vinegar & tartar sauce lacked in flavour/ taste. They should consider changing brands even though it's franchised and may not be able to. I saw a sign that they serve breakfast but did not see a breakfast menu nor is it printed on their takeout menu. I'm not too sure...

I decided to go there with a friend of mine tonight. As soon as I walked in it smelled like bad fish. That smell just didn’t go away. I’ve been in fish and chips places before but never have I felt so disgusted by the smell of a place.

After getting over that, my friend and I sat down and the service was really good. Staff is really friendly and they are knowledgeable about the menu.

Upon looking at the menu, the prices are really high. Or atleast compared to what I’m used to. Your not spending less than $20 a person and that’s without appetizers.

Once we ordered, it wasn’t a long wait at all for the food. Maybe 10 minutes. However, when the food did arrive, I basically got a plate of fries with what I thought to be a small piece of fish. And a very small portion of coleslaw. I feel as though for the price, I did not need a plate of fries.

It’s not a bad place, the food was pretty damn good. But I think if I were to go back it would be rarely based on price and portion size. But hopefully that smell can be addressed. It was really...

I was very excited to try this place as fish and chips is a family favorite and usually fantastic. BIG disappointment here. First off, the man that greeted us Tom, who claimed he was the Manager was very abrupt and frankly rude. He pointed us to a take a seat at a table. Once we sat down we noticed that the table was not properly cleaned and still had food particles from the last visitor on it. We proceeded to order and when the food arrived, all though we were all very hungry, we were all disappointed. The fish was over cooked, almost burnt and the fries were obviously cooked much, much earlier. The food was NOT fresh. Tomato's in the salad were starting to turn and the lettuce was limp. It seems as though nothing was right. It is no wonder there were only two other people in the large restaurant. As we were paying Tom before we left, I tried to give him some feedback to which he instantly got defensive. He became very offended and lashed out at us telling us "we don't have to come back"! No problem...
