This is a truely mixed review. The food was great, but the dining experience needs some improvements. There’s a reason this is a long review, stick with me…
The Menu is intimidating for anyone not VERY familiar with Korean food. It looks very expensive, but the portions are very large. Honestly too large. Every single table left with takeaway containers when we dined there. Usually this isn’t an issue but with most menu items starting at $30+ for regular size (big enough for 2 to share) and large size for $40+, the menu would benefit from smaller, less expensive portions. This would also make it a bit easier for folks to try some of the more traditional dishes without committing $40 or more for a single dish (without rice). They also have an atrocious alcoholic drinks selection with just Kokanee, Budweiser or Soju. They would really benefit from some craft beers… not hard to find with a craft brewery 2 doors down! The combination of some cheaper menu items (fried chicken or any appetisers for less than $30 please!) and some craft beers would be absolutely spectacular. They have a great patio for a summer evening, and there’s so much potential if they made some tweaks to their menu.
I had a lot of time to think about this review as we waited over 45 minutes for our only dish (Pork Tang Su Yuk), they forgot our dumpling order, and when I asked for a second serving of rice it took another 5 minutes to come out even though there were no other diners at that point. They must have been busier than usual (although there were a few tables free) and all the other tables were also waiting a really long time for service.
But after all that, the pork was very fresh, hot and crispy, the sweet and sour style sauce on the side was good, and there were some tasty side pickles. The regular size was enough for 2 hungry people.
TL/DR: It took me a long time to finally dine at this longstanding local restaurant, and I hope to go back again if there are some tweaks to the menu sizing and pricing, better drinks on offer, and...
Read moreWe accidentally found this restaurant after a study session at a friend's home near by.
It was the first time two of my Japanese friends had Chinese-Korean style cuisine and it was the perfect place to introduce them.
I've been to many Chinese-Korean style restaurants, but this location (from what I know) is the ONLY place that allows you to order Tangsuyuk/Kanpoongi/Lajoki in REGULAR or LARGE size. Really appreciate the size, portion difference, and prices.
We ordered the Kanpoongi, Jijangpong, Samsung Jianpong (extra spicy), and lastly the Uni Jiajangmyun.
The kanpoongi was one of the best dishes I have ate. Living in Edmonton, this dish was one of my go to's and the last restaurant (Korean BBQ House) that had it closed. Living in Vancouver I've tried to find this dish again and I think I found it. This restaurant's kanpoongi is literally the best that's comparable to the one I have in memory of my favorite restaurant back in Edmonton. Even for a regular portion, the amount we got was plenty, sauce was quite different from what I had, but it was a unique and stood out to me. I absolutely loved this.
The Jijangpong's were 5 stars all around. The soup was spicy, and had a rich seafood flavor that stood out more than other places. Noodles seemed to be freshly made? The amount of seafood was quite generous, was very surprised by this.
Portion size? Seafood? Spiciness? Taste? Total wins across the board. I would come here nearly every day if I could, but unfortunately I live in a different part of Vancouver.
The Jiajangmyun was also a banger. The sauce was super thick, and rich with meat and veggies. Portion size was again, generous and delicious.
What a gem we've stumbled on, my friends had Jijangpong and Jijajangmyun in Japan many times, but what they had here completely changed their experience.
We left stuffed, and made plans to visit again - or perhaps even...
Read moreI would like to review Ga hyang ru Korean Chinese restaurant in North Vancouver.
We ordered the lunch special menu which was jjajangmyun with tansuyuk, jjampong with tansuyuk, along with fried mandoo and soybean noodles. Jjajangmyun was below average. I would rate it 6/10. Tansuyuk was also mediocre, as it tasted very gamey. The sauce was also too sweet. I would rate it 6/10. Jjampong was below average, being heavy on pepper powder and lacking the deep seafood flavour. I would rate it 6/10. Fried mandoo was nothing special, something you would expect from deep fried food. I would rate it 6.5/10. Their soybean noodle was the best out of today's selection, tasting fresh and healthy, soup was thick with the ground beans and noodles were chewy. It's sad to say their summer special menu is the most noteworthy out of their dishes. It's only a seasonal menu atypical of a Korean Chinese restaurant, and should definitely not be the standout.
However, the service or the waitress was outstanding. She fully explained the menu to us, including the lunch specials, was very welcoming and checked in several times to see if anything else was needed. I would rate the service 9/10
Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend this restaurant unless you are in the area and was craving Korean Chinese food. There are plenty of other choices available especially if you are willing to...
