We were looking forward to trying this new place, but we left very disappointed without even having a chance to get a table because of poor service and inexperienced management. Their waiting system is a joke. After we checked in and waited for our turn, we chose to stay and wait in the restaurant (we were the only two waiting on site). At that time, several tables had been empty for more than ten minutes, but we were still patiently waiting for our turn and a table to be assigned. I completely understand that there were people ahead of us but may not have shown up for some reasons (the server said they don't take reservations or call ahead to be placed on the waiting list. All waiting lists have to be made in person on site). All the customers were already seated and enjoying their food except us. I know this is a small restaurant and I'm willing to wait patiently for our turn. While we were waiting, the server kept telling us that we were second in line, and then after waiting for over 30 minutes, we were finally told that we were next because a table of 4 was finally leaving. However, at this time, another server, knowing that it was our turn, deliberately gave up the table that should have been given to us to two other customers who had been sitting down to eat for about 30 minutes. The waiter asked us to wait until the next table because those two customers wanted a bigger table. When I complained, the server kept saying that those two customers wanted a bigger table for their food. We were asked to wait for the next available table, if we didn't want their table (of 2). I asked how they knew we wouldn't order more food than them and that the table was big enough for us. When the manager was called out, he didn't see anything wrong with their approach and responded "We didn't tell you which table or the size of table you were going to get." Their menu doesn't have much choice to begin with and is a bit pricey. If you don't mind the endless wait, it might be...
Read moreI thought i would try this new korean restaurant (Hanyang Jokbal). I ordered the Garlic Jokbal. The dish taste good but the garlic was a bit burnt and bitter. It would of been nicer if the garlic was light golden brown. The jokbal itself was good. I ordered rice cake as well for extra 4$.. I thought it would be more than four 3” long pieces. (see the pics). 1$ a piece lol. I can probably eat about 20-30 pcs The sides were good Kimchi, cabbage salad, jalapeño and garlic, two sauces. Normally these are unlimited at other Korean restaurants. But here cost $3 if you want more after the initial round.
The Garlic Jokbal came with sides, soup and a plate of lettuce. In my opinion they should have given a bowl of rice and more lettuce to eat with the Jokbal. But just eating Jokbal without rice or lettuce is salty and you get tired of it. The ratio to lettuce and jokbal is not very good. I guess they want to charge you more for lettuce or something. But seems like anything extra will cost you. I find it a bit pricey for what you are getting. The menu is limited with mostly dinner for 2 with different jokbal dishes. Our meal came to 60$. The service was standard. The restaurant is small and cozy. It’s busy and you have time to put your name on the ipad when you enter and there is a...
Read moreToday, I was fired up because I was going to Hanyang Jokbal. It’s a Korean eatery beside the Jiffy Lube on Oxford St Proudfoot Ln. Their specialty is jokbal (Korean braised pork) and it takes up almost all of their menu.
Before my order was brought, I was given a variety of light appetizers to keep me occupied. My favourite of these were the bean sprouts in a sweet sauce. A little after that came an appetizing soup. Both the appetizers and the soup were free.
The main I ordered was the A3 Garlic Jokbal. This was quite different than how us Canadians eat pork. I could see and taste a semi-sweet garlic paste that had the consistency and colour of applesauce. In my photo, you can obviously see a big bone, but there were small bones, too. This could be hazardous, so please eat carefully. This dish came with a side of spicy rice cakes. Sadly, the side wasn’t great. At least for me, the flavours didn’t come together.
Hanyang makes good use of their limited space. They built in a clever design to maximize dining capacity, without compromising customers’ comfort. Added to that, the whole dining area is wooden.
The total came to $68.
Jokbal is a new way you should consider to eat pork. Hanyang is the best...
