We went in just after a busy time so kitchen was understandable slower, although only 2 staff on for a long weekend lunch. Stove was down so couldn't do some dishes, sucks but OK. Changed our orders, food came out. I had fish and what were supposed to be fries. My husband had wings, which were excellent. Fish was OK, a little geasy but they were busy. Fries were burnt. Not just dark in color as the waitress tried to tell me, but truly burnt flavored. Also most of the 'fries' on my plate were 1/2 inch pieces that you couldn't put a fork through. The waitress was willing to replace them, but they would come out the same she said. I refused more and she was like it's no trouble....so she tried to do her job, but if you are telling me you are going to bring me the exact same thing, why would I bother? She told me the fries were Normal, it was just how they were cut that made them appear burnt and everyone else likes them that way. I had to raise my eyebrows as she had a load of dirty dishes in her hand. Every one had fries on them. I then glanced to the vacant but unclear ed tables around me. Everyone of them had plates with fries on them, some of them clearly untouched. While I know its not her fault, it's real hard to pay for that let...
Read moreSimply an amazing place with great food.
An establishment is only as good as its staff and their service. Good food and a great atmosphere can only provide part of the experience; one negative encounter can change one’s entire outlook.
I respect the Portsmouth Tavern and its usual service standards, which is why I'm leaving a 4-star review instead of something lower. However, I feel compelled to share a negative experience that I've encountered on a few occasions.
There is one staff member—a server/bartender—who, when working, makes me feel like serving is a burden. Comments like, “Oh, I’m busy, but did you want something else?” and “Oh, I forgot to ask, did you want something else to eat or drink?” make me feel unwelcome.
An establishment's goal should be to ensure customers feel valued and well-attended, not to make them feel ignored or like a nuisance. Consistent, attentive service is essential to maintaining the high standards that the Portsmouth Tavern is known for. I hope management addresses this issue to ensure every customer enjoys the full experience this wonderful place...
Read moreWhat a fantastic little hole-in-the-wall! Came here recently after hearing some good things about them, and wow, I wish I'd come sooner! As someone whose always preferred the more low-key, local-friendly, intimate atmosphere of pubs, I always make it a point, whatever city I wind up living in, to find 'that place' that's going to become a regular spot for me to take family and friends. And I think the Portsmouth is it. Service was excellent. That's always a huge plus in my books, and this place really seemed to spare no effort in making my party and I feel welcome and attended. Food was fantastic!! Fairly typical pub-style, but everything was so well made. Was a little bummed that they didn't have the beef dip, which was the dish that I was really psyched for, but hey, just gives me an excuse to come back, doesn't it? Everything was prepared very well, very nice portions, and very fresh. The atmosphere was super charming, and really, I just love places like this. Top marks all around folks. See ya...
