I hesitated even posting a review because it meant I had to give this place a star. The service was terribly rude. They were expecting a massive group but sat us first. AFTER they seated us they wanted us to move to a booth, to accommodate a group that was way too large for the space, which was not possible for me due to a disability. I was asked no less than 4 times! Not my problem that you over booked! We ordered garlic bread, lasagna and chicken parm. They brought the garlic bread out well before the entrees. I assumed common sense would prevail and the garlic bread would make its appearance with the rest of our meal. She could also have asked if we wanted everything at once but didn’t. I agreed to mushrooms in my lasagna. Had I known this “made fresh daily” lasagna used CANNED mushrooms I would have said no. The “lasagna” was layer upon layer of nothing but noodles with one layer of ricotta and one top layer of meat sauce. It was so bad I sent it back and just ordered a house salad. She zipped off before I could ask what dressings or choose a small instead of a large. Since she didn’t ask my dressing preference I assumed house meant a vinaigrette. When I asked her in passing what size she told the kitchen of course she said large (it’s more expensive). I asked her to make it a small. I was brought a small iceberg lettuce salad with ranch dressing (I would not choose this) with cheap no name croutons and a barely there odd assortment of wilted veggies. My husband didn’t mind his chicken parm so at least the night wasn’t a total bust. I’m assuming all the rave reviews are from hungry post secondary students happy with cheap and plentiful or those who value quantity over quality. Needless to say I would not go back...
Read moreIt was out second time going here. The first time was take-out in 2020. Given the reasonable price we got several dishes and were impressed with the quantity of food. However, we found the flavor quite mild and comparable to a basic home-cooked meal. In our opinion, most other italian restaurants had more flavorful food.We figured it might be a takeout COVID thing and were willing to try again.
For our second time in 2023, we brought some friends to the restaurant. It's nice having a small establishment downtown with character when many downtown stores are closed or chains. The location is very cool in a basement off a side ally with rustic atmosphere with antiques everywhere. They have a small, cozy, dining room. It looks like a set of a NYC movie basement restaurant. The staff was very friendly and gave recommendations.
Likely due to inflation, the prices were a bit higher ($25 for pasta & side salad with no drinks), but the portions were still massive and is lower than other sit-down Italian places in London. The food was better than in 2020, but again not as flavorful as we hoped.
Despite the volume, we felt that the food was overpriced for dishes we felt we could make similarly well at home. We all took home leftovers, but I would have prefered smaller portions of better food or smaller portions for less money.
Across both times we ended up trying a large array of food including the spaghetti, carbonara, lasagna, chicken parm, and a few apps. Unfortunately both times we felt the food only got a solid "okay." None of the four of us plan to be back, but we are glad we went once for the atmosphere and experience.
p.s., They have discounted lunch prices and somewhat flexible closing hours depending on how...
Read moreGreat atmosphere, friendly staff, upsetting food. Don’t understand how this place has so many good reviews. I’ve had pasta with $5 sauce out of a jar that has 10X the flavour of this place. If I had to describe the food in one word it would be, bland. Everything lacked flavour. Quality felt cheap. Menu said fresh chicken, when we asked waitress she said it was frozen. Lasagna said made fresh daily, mushrooms and pasta felt soggy and soaked through. Cheese on garlic bread was rubbery and stretchier than an elastic band. It felt as if it was microwaved. I’m not being hard here, just honest. The meat balls felt like they were a week old and also rubbery as if they had been microwaved or reheated multiple times. Alfredo sauce on my daughter’s entree had zero flavour. Worse than out of a Classico jar at the grocery store. I was going to leave a three star review because I felt the server was nice and the decor inside the restaurant was really cool providing a fun atmosphere. However, on the drive home my wife started to feel sick and threw up her meal when we got home, which consisted of their spegeddy with house made vegetable sauce and meatballs. We didn’t expect fine dining but we expected a decent meal. The place seemed busy and so did their takeout which just left us scratching our heads. I honestly feel that $1 grocery store spaghetti and $3 sauce from a can tastes better than what they served us. I wouldn’t eat here again if...
