Horrible Experience at Baja Burger Shack, Britannia Beach, Ottawa – Overpriced and Disappointing
I had high hopes for Baja Burger Shack at Britannia Beach, Ottawa, given its reputation, but this was hands-down one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had. For a beachside burger joint, I expected decent food at reasonable prices, but what I got was an overpriced, low-quality meal that left me frustrated and $47 poorer.
First, the prices are absolutely outrageous for what you get. I ordered X2 Baja burgers, a side of fries, and two beers, and the total came to a jaw-dropping $47. For a shack on a beach, charging these prices is borderline criminal. I could’ve eaten at a proper restaurant for less! The menu boasts about their "award-winning" (from 2011) burgers, but there’s nothing gourmet here to justify the cost.
The food quality was a massive letdown. The burger itself was mediocre at best—dry, overcooked, and lacking any real flavor. The patty tasted like it was pre-formed and frozen, not the fresh, hand-crafted beef they claim to serve. The Baja sauce, which they hype up, was just a bland, watery mayo with a hint of spice. The bun was soggy and fell apart after one bite, making the whole thing a messy disaster. Like I’m talking mushy shitty bun. For the price, I expected something exceptional, not a fast-food-level burger that Harveys or even McDonald’s could easily outdo.
The fries were an even bigger disappointment. They were clearly frozen, straight-from-the-bag McCain fries, undercooked and soggy. For a place charging premium prices, using cheap frozen fries is unforgivable. I’ve had better fries from food trucks for half the cost. The portion was decent, but who cares when the quality is this bad? It’s insulting to serve such low-effort sides at a place that claims to be a foodie destination.
To top it all off, they didn’t even have milkshakes available, despite advertising them on the menu. The staff shrugged it off, saying the machine was broken, with no apology or alternative offered. For a beachside spot, a cold milkshake would’ve been the one saving grace, but they couldn’t even deliver on that. The service was slow, too—waiting 20 minutes for this subpar meal felt like an eternity, especially with only a few people in line.
The only redeeming factor is the location at Britannia Beach, but even that’s not enough to save this place. You’re better off packing a picnic or hitting a fast-food chain nearby, where you’ll get better food for a fraction of the price. Baja Burger Shack is a total rip-off, serving overpriced, low-quality food with zero care for customer satisfaction. Save your money...

Review:
During my recent visit to Baja Burger, I encountered a disappointing experience with their pricing policy that left me with mixed feelings about the establishment. While the food and overall ambiance were satisfactory, the inconsistency between the website menu and the actual prices dampened my dining experience.
Before my visit, I had checked their website and noticed that the lime margaritas were listed at $12. With this information in mind, I visited the restaurant expecting to enjoy their margaritas at the advertised price. However, upon arriving at the venue, I discovered that the actual price for the margaritas was $15, which came as an unwelcome surprise. This discrepancy between the website and the on-site pricing left me feeling misled and dissatisfied, as the $3 increase seemed significant for a standard margarita.
On a more positive note, the Baja burger that I ordered was acceptable in terms of taste. While it didn't exceed my expectations, it provided a decent flavor profile. However, I couldn't help but feel that the overall experience was somewhat overshadowed by the pricing issue.
Furthermore, during my visit, it became apparent that there was a shortage of staff. This resulted in longer waiting times for both ordering and receiving the food. I observed several patrons waiting for their orders, and I personally experienced a delay of approximately 15 to 20 minutes before my order was prepared. The understaffing issue contributed to a less efficient service and detracted from the overall dining experience.
In conclusion, while Baja Burger offered an acceptable taste experience with their food, the disappointment stemming from the pricing inconsistency and the lack of staff diminished the overall enjoyment. I would recommend that the restaurant takes immediate action to address these issues, ensuring that their website reflects accurate pricing information and that sufficient staff members are available to provide efficient service.

Read moreHi, late yesterday afternoon my husband decided to go have a burger and a beer at Baja. It was our first time there this summer. Upon entering we noticed WOW they have Beau's Lug Thread... super so we decided to order a Beau's each. Only to be told their keg froze? hummmm ok... so we decided on another kind. Then my husband ordered a Baja Burger and I ordered the hot dog. When our order was ready, my hubby picked up our food and came back to our table. He gave me my hot dog and when I opened the wrap ... super gross ... my bun was molded. I was so disgusted, never in my life has this ever happened to me... not even in Cuba. I went to the counter and told the girl and showed her my bun. She asked if if wanted something else. I said after that I certainly do not want anything and that I lost my appetite. She said we'll I'll have to show my boss. I said show your boss but I still do not want anything I'm grossed out. So off she goes and when she got backs he says I can refund your money if you do not want anything else. I then said I hope you can refund my money this is gross. I asked if the owner was there and she said no. So no apologies... no nothing... just here's your money back. I got back to our table and my husband was waiting for me to eat his hamburger. He asked if I got my money back. I said yes and didn't want nothing else to eat since I had lost my appetite. He started eating his and after 3 bites, he puts his hamburger back down and says .... gross they certainly do not taste like last years burger... the texture is off. So in my opinion this place is totally disgusting and certainly not what it was years ago when CTV live voted them best burger in Ottawa... now it's the grossest...
