It always brings me joy when I make new discoveries when it comes to conventional (or unconventional) dining. In this case, my quick golf getaway in Kanata brought me to a local gem of a pub. The Glen was suggested to me through a friend and I certainly wasn't in a steak or sushi kinda mood. Upon my arrival I was greeted by the manager (Alyssa) with a smile. I was solo, so it was easy to gain quick access to the bar where I sat comfortably amongst the regulars and otherwise. One glance at the extensive menu I knew I was ready to indulge. Emily (my initial server behind the bar) made me feel at home by guiding me through the drink menu to help me make my beverage of choice. I was in a Scottish Pub... So Scottish lager it was. Tennent (photo) was the name and it was cold, smooth, and delicious upon the very first gulp. Then moved on to ordering the signature dish : Beer battered fish and chips..... They once again did not disappoint. A lightly battered generous haddock portion stared at me as it rested on a bed of crispy chips (note: order your fries well done). It is not every day I have fish and chips but this was the best I've had to date. The tartar sauces were offered as traditional, spicy Cajun, and dill... Emily obliged my request to sample all three and that was the way to go. Beyond 'melt in your mouth' deliciousness! After I "HOOVERED" this splendid dish, I still craved a touch of sweetness. This is where Geri (Emily's gregarious cohort and veritable partner in crime) dashed on the scene and suggested I treat myself to a butter toffee pudding. The name itself landed me three more pounds (kidding) but I was more than intrigued. Geri was right.... The dessert Gods have prevailed (see photo). This buttery anomaly was gooey cakey goodness that will leave you wanting more (leave your guilty conscious at the door and ask Geri to hook you up with a cold glass of milk... She knew where I was at).
All in all, I think you can surmise that this was a meal that made a lasting impression. As did the staff who were all extremely cordial. The Glen Scottish Pub is a winner. Unfortunately, being from Montreal, I have to wait until I return to the area.... Or maybe I should just move to Ottawa?? (Quebec Taxes are killer anyways).
Thank you to all who make the entire experience memorable and Google...
Read moreMy GF and I were really looking forward to trying this place. Went at 8:30 on Friday night. Our server forgot our drink order and didn't come back for a long time. Someone else brought our app, Scotch Egg (one of my favs), but it was so overcooked, it was rock hard and crumbling. Didn't see another server until our mains. My steak and ale pie was tasty, but very small portion, maybe 3oz of meat with gravy, but my scamps (veg) were stone cold. My GF got the fish & chips (their signature dish according to the menu), it was so overcooked, like dark dark dark and dry. Server was no where to be found so we managed to get the attention of the bartender after about 5 minutes. She kindly came over and I showed her the egg and the fish and she immediately apologized because it was so obviously overcooked. A manager arrived and was very apologetic. They took the fish and left the fries, and took my plate with the cold veg, she came back with the same pie on a new plate (I new it was a new plate because it was still wet from the dishwasher) and said they were reheating my veg. A new piece of fish was delivered but her fries were cold at this point, 10 minutes later my veg arrived but I was already done eating the pie. They offered a free desert but at that point we just wanted to leave. Her fish was ok the second time, but it would have been nice to have the whole meal together. Avoid the scotch egg definitely not worth the $14 unless you like dry and crumbly. Super disappointing and I feel it could have been handled better. It would also be cool if the server would check on the table every now and then. Bill was $61, $71 with tip. We came home and had leftover lasagna. Too bad I really liked the atmosphere, but service and food quality too poor to spend hard...
Read moreWent there today (Wed Aug 18th) with four friends for lunch. Had a great time. No pressure to eat and leave.
Waitress was Debbie, and she was great - looked after us, was fun, etc.
We ordered: one deep fried zucchini two fish burgers one fish tacos one beer battered fish & chips,
plus various drinks.
Food was excellent - my dish - fish and chips - were nicely done. Would have liked a few more chips, and somehow missed the tartar sauce (could have been my mistake).
One of our group ordered dessert, and it looked sinful. He did not complain.
I also ordered some take-out - two scotch eggs plus one chicken curry pie and one steak & ale pie with mushrooms. I opted for mashed potatoes for both pies and they both came with beeps. Steak & ale pie also came with gravy.
Pies, potatoes, and beeps were delicious but would suggest gravy be included with mashed potatoes.
For dinner, we reheated pies, potatoes, and beeps in microwave. Would be helpful to have chef’s suggestions as to how high and for how long. I did 5 minutes at 50% for the steak & ale pie and, although it was very good, it was a bit dry. So, maybe some more gravy. Potatoes were delicious.
Scotch eggs were a bit dry. Maybe they’re just not suited for take-out and re-heating. We’ve had them before, when dining indoors at The Glen, and they were delicious.
All in all, another great experience. Keep...
