My husband and I had the pleasure of experiencing the rich and delightful flavours of Yemeni cuisine tonight for the first time at Yemen Gate. Our visit left us utterly impressed, and we will definitely be coming back.
From the moment we stepped in, we were offered warm and hospitable service. We were asked if we had any questions, and they took the time to explain each dish we were eyeing, making recommendations based on our preferences.
For appetizers, we shared the mulukhiyah soup, okra soup, and cucumber yogurt salad. All were delicious, each one offering unique tastes and textures. For our main courses, we indulged in the lamb mandi and lamb pot, both of which were cooked to perfection. The tenderness of the lamb, combined with the aromatic spices, made for two wonderful dishes. To drink, we shared an earayiysi, which was delightful.
The generous portions (and our desire to also sample a few appetizers!) ensured we had much more than we could eat during our visit, allowing us to take some home for a second round of enjoyment.
While everything was delicious, for both my husband and I the stand out dish of the night was the lamb pot. It is also the most popular dish there, from what were told. It was full of flavour, and arrived at the table sizzling. It also came with a serving of Yemeni flatbread, which was nothing short of magical. Freshly baked, it was the ideal accompaniment to the dish. It reminded me of Indian naan, only much larger (and better) in my opinion.
For dessert, we shared a ma'asoub: a dessert with bananas, Yemeni flat bread and cream, topped with honey. it was the perfect sweet note to end our meal. The combination of flavours in this traditional Yemeni dish was a delight. My husband also had an Adani tea which he enjoyed: a sweet tea similar to chai, with cardamom and other spices.
In summary, our first experience with Yemeni cuisine at Yemen Gate was an absolute delight. From the delectable dishes to the friendly and knowledgeable staff, every aspect of our visit was top-notch. We left with full stomachs, and will definitely be back. If you're looking for an authentic and welcoming Yemeni dining experience, do yourself a favour and...
Read moreThis restaurant has all the components that make an amazing community gathering spot. The food was delicious, I had the lamb broth, chicken quarter mandi, cucumber yogurt salad, and ma'asoub. The lamb broth was well seasoned with spices and served with a lemon wedge. The dash of lemon really makes the flavor of the broth shine, especially if you're a fan of lamb. The cucumber yogurt salad has a rich and garlicky flavor that goes amazing with the chicken mandi. The chicken mandi was delicious; the chicken is well seasoned with a slight smokey flavor. The rice is seasoned and served with onions, nuts, and raisins on it, which provide heterogeneous flavor, which allows for a delicious spoonful each time. The hot sauce served with the main was amazing and brought the dish together. Not only spicy but fresh and flavorful. To finish, the maasoub is like a moist banana bread packed with flavor and served with honey to drizzle on top. To make the experience even better, the service was top notch and very friendly. The atmosphere of the restaurant highlighted Yemeni culture, and the music provided a great feeling of comfort. I also saw that the restaurant had an area to sit on a raised bed with cushions and carpet padding the area. This is most likely for large groups, but a great traditional way to enjoy the meal. Regular seating is...
