Food: We all had the fish and chips and they were delicious. They weren't battered, as you would expect in a pub, instead they were coated with I say panko, though my sister thought they were breaded, either way, the coating had herbs and was crispy and tasty.
The "fish dip" as my kids call it, was also very good. I say fish dip because it was quite different from the standard tartar sauce. With the usual battered haddock, I would have enjoyed it more, but the fish dip was a little too overpowering for the herb coating, lemon suited it better.
The expected coleslaw was quite nice and not too sweet, with a vinegar dressing, not a mayonnaise one.
The fries were fresh but the food was served in those plastic baskets with only one sheet of checked paper folded into a triangle, so crumbs fell through to the table, which was messy.
Service: The ladies were very polite and welcoming. The bartender was quick to greet us. She told us cash only as soon as we sat down, let us know there was an ATM at the back, took our drink orders and told us thd cook would take our food orders. We even had to pay separately, all of which seemed strange to me. Then the cook told us that only deep fried food was available!?! Luckily we were all happy to have the fish and chips.
Atmosphere: Very bare, but clean. We are talking bare wood tables, floor, chairs, 2 big TVs with 2 different hockey games playing. The place was mostly empty because strangely enough, even on a Saturday night not many people were keen to go out into the gusting winds, 14 inches of snow and unplowed roads. One of the reasons we chose it was because it was only 350 meters from my sister's house, so we could walk there and my sister said it typically had decent pub food.
Overall, we enjoyed our food, and tried to ignore the hockey and discussed the recipe for the fish dip (I think it has mace, my sister says it's nutmeg and the cook just smiled), the reason for the many doors (turned out one was a smoking patio), and why the cook was...
Read moreWe don't eat out often ,preferring to pick up meals to eat at home. Last Friday my husband brought home the best pieces of Haddock that I have ever eaten. It was pan fried in crumbs rather than the regular old deep fried fare that you would expect. It was so good and really well priced. For $19 we had enough for a meal each. In comparison, the last time we went for burgers and fries at a west side fast food place, the bill was a whopping $38. I was stunned and will definitely NOT be going back there but count me in for more Haddock and...
Read moreBartender was great. Very attentive. Kept everyone's drink full.
I ordered a 2 piece broasted chicken meal with potato wedges, coleslaw, and a honey dip.
$17 total
Pretty disappointed when I got home. No coleslaw, no honey dip.
7 potato wedges and 2 pieces of chicken. I think the wedges were put in the broaster with the chicken instead of separate in a regular fryer. Only ate 1 wedge and it was totally saturated with cooking oil.
Good spot for drinks but don't recommend...
