As a business owner, we understand how challenging it is to run a business, so we strive to support our local enterprises. Recently, Yan’s House opened, and we have visited four times over the past few weeks, enjoying their Dim Sum and dinners. Acknowledging that mistakes are common during a soft opening, we didn't complain when our first dinner for two order was incorrect. The dinner specials menu lists prices, soup options, and dish descriptions with corresponding numbers, but does not show individual dish prices. Customers can choose two items for a dinner for two, four items for a dinner for four, and so on. Today, we dined there again, ordering from the dinner for two menu and specifying the dish numbers and names. Realizing we had forgotten to order the soup included in the dinner for two, I informed one of the waitresses. When our meals arrived, the waitress asked if we needed rice, and I requested just one bowl to avoid wasting food. When we were ready to leave, I went to the restroom while my wife paid. Afterward, she told me we were charged $3 for the bowl of rice, and the total was about $62 with GST. I mentioned that rice is included with the dinner special, and our previous visits cost around $51 with GST. We returned to discuss the error with the staff. They explained that because we didn't specify the dinner for two, we were charged separately for the soup and rice, resulting in a higher total. Despite ordering from the dinner combination menu and clearly stating the item numbers, the staff insisted it was our fault for not explicitly saying "dinner for two." The person who took our order refused to correct the mistake, even though individual dish prices weren't listed on the special menu where we ordered from. A waitress, not the staff who took our order, apologized, but we assured her it wasn't necessary for her to as we decided not to ever return. We're very disappointed with the service and their unwillingness to correct the error. While it's a minor financial issue, we will not visit Yan’s House again and advise others to clearly specify their order and check their bills...
Read moreMy father had a minor procedure done in Maple Ridge done in the morning and on the way back, he said he wanted dim sum. I knew about Yan’s but hadn’t had a chance to come out this way before. It was the perfect opportunity to try it out and have my folks with me.
We arrived thinking it would be slow for a Monday but it was surprising busy. 15 tables were sat by the time we settled in and that’s always a great sign for a restaurant and its quality. Because of its location, seeing that many tables meant that locals knew the spot to have dim sum in Port Coquitlam. We got there shortly after 11:30.
We weren’t looking to be full but still wanted to try a few dishes. We ordered the Har Gao (Shrimp Dumplings), Siu Mai (Pork Dumpling with Shrimp), Ha Cheung (Shrimp Rice Noodle Roll), Lo Mai Gai (Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf), and Jiaoyan Youyu (Deep Fried Squid with Pepper Salt).
Everything was great. Nowadays Siu Mai comes with minced or diced shrimp but theirs is whole inside. A welcome return to that. Tasty. The Ha Cheung was really well done with the rice roll being soft and with a nice bite. My dad and I actually ordered a second order of each.
My only quip was that the Jiaoyan Youyu topping was a little too salty. The squid was incredible, very soft and not very chewy at all. The pieces were large and well battered. It’s just the crackling topping they put on top. We didn’t know if that was the standard but everything else was great so we didn’t say anything. We just didn’t eat all of the topping.
I will say that as I was paying for the bill, my parents mentioned to our server and she was very nice and told us that we should have mentioned it earlier and they could have replaced it. That was really cool of her.
Overall it was a fantastic meal with my parents. Everything was really well done and the atmosphere was on point with how busy it was. I will definitely be back when my parents and I return to the area next...
Read moreIt was a disastrous take-out order on Christmas Day. The restaurant was quite pack, as expected being Christmas Day and I am sure the quality is questionable. I ordered 6 dishes. Diced chicken with salted fish & tofu - 90% tofu, 10% chicken and definitely no salted fish. The looks of it is very unappetizing and virtually tasteless. Yan's House special sparerib - clearly they gave me the wrong order and it turned out to be honey garlic spareribs Deep fried squid with peppery salt - completely with any trace of peppery salted other then it is deep fried and the flour batter would not stick to the squid. Beef with string beans in black bean sauce - 90% of string beans and few slices of beef with no taste of the black bean sauce Deep fried prawns with pumpkin and salted egg yolk - 5 pieces of prawns and the rest is pumpkin. Absolutely too little of the salted egg yolk Fried vermicelli - too ordinary
To sum it up, the restaurant was all about rushing through the orders and sacrificing quality. We dined in several months ago and it was just an average family restaurant. So we though we would order take out for our Christmas lunch but it turned out to be very bad. There is an inherent risk whenever you order take-out because you never know what's inside the packaging. I thought is was a waste of my time to call the restaurant to complain. Damage was already done, so the recourse is to write this review and I hope the restaurant owner reads it.So beware if you planning to go there. Will never step in there again. If I can award No Star, I would...
