First and foremost food quality was great. However, here comes the issue.
We threw a surprise 46th birthday for my oldest brother. There were just less than 24 guests including 2 toddlers and a baby around 12:45pm reservation. We were in the establishment between 12:45- 4pm. There were possibly 2-3 tables of other patrons between that time.
My nephew who is 10 has autism and has very specific sensory diet and won’t eat unless it’s a certain type of food. The restaurant would not let him bring the food in and my brother and nephew ended up having to eat in their car!! Firstly, my brother’s birthday, secondly a person (10 years old) with special needs who has a certain diet ended up having to spend a good amount of time in their car instead of being around family to celebrate.
When we asked staff, response was “we were not told ahead about this..” ? Then proceeded to say they’ve had similar incidents? I spoke to my sister in law who was already heightened and asked to speak to the owner in which she was ignored and did not communicate the issues or even offer any other solution or help accommodate or suggest anything otherwise. Instead left her staff unsupported?
It is extremely disappointing and as someone who has worked with children and youth with special needs for almost 20 years this is one of the most disappointing interactions I’ve ever come across.
They were very quick to ask for the bill at the end which was not a cheap group bill considering it was a large group yet were not able to accommodate the slightest bit for someone who has ASD let alone communicate and provide an alternative solution.
There were no further explanation or communication about this matter. I spoke to a friend who works for the human rights tribunal and very much said that this is possibly a human rights issue that we have experienced today.
Unless your kid can sit still I definitely would not recommend this establishment nor would I recommend If you or someone you know has special needs/ dietary restrictions that will require outside food. I’m keen to hear from the owner to hear their position on this. You were there today and chose not to support your staff nor tend to the customer. What is your policy when it comes to providing for people with special needs? This is not a nut allergy or diet issue this is specifically someone’s sensory issues in which they WILL NOT EAT anything else aside from he had today.
Your establishment pushed out a child with special needs (autism) to eat in their car while the rest of their family and friends ate in your restaurant. Mind you they couldn’t eat outside the rain/ wet snow when they were asked it had to be eaten outside.
Do better.
** Update
Thank you for response. However, that did not exactly align with our experience. When my nephew was already outside in the car with my brother, I spoke to one of the servers and informed him of the situation and instead of dealing with it at the moment coming up with a solution, the response was “this is the owners policy I’m sorry etc..” even though we’ve informed them about his autism. They could have been asked to come back instead of having to be out in their car to eat.
We were told that a server approached with “pork Gyoza on the house for the inconvenience” after they returned to the restaurant which sure is a good gesture but doesn’t equate to what had already transpired. Some disabilities are “invisible” and aren’t physically evident and why put a child or anyone in an uncomfortable situation. We had hoped that this would’ve been avoided and communicated by management instead of having to hear back from a...
Read moreWas excited to visit since I have tried and loved the food and service from the Sushi On in Burnaby, on Edmonds street. Met up with friends in Coquitlam, as they live in that area. First thing we saw from the door was a crowd so we knew there was going to be a wait. Always a good sign of a great spot! We walked in and was treated by what looked like an annoyed face. The server put her hands up, like to surrender, and said there's no tables. Almost like she was hoping we would leave. We asked her to put us on the wait list and she told us to fill the sheet. The place was packed but what was strange was there was one full table used for. I guess Uber eats and skipped dishes. They could have sat for as it looked like a prime table. Another table was empty with maybe two chairs in it. A family of five in front of us asked why that table was empty and the annoyed server told her there's no chairs. If you look around, there were empty chairs at every table they could have grabbed from. You can tell the family in front of us was annoyed as well as I'm sure they received the same greeting as we did. They eventually left 5 minutes after being seated. We finally got seated and ordered. There were three of us. The food is delicious and VERY reasonably priced. I had the beef bento box for $15. The tempura was nicely fried. The beef and rice tasted delicious. We were still nibbling and was no more than 45 minutes since we sat down when the server came back to ask how we'd like to pay and we said by card and separately. She came back with the bills and they were completely wrong. Being the one who took our order she should have been aware of what we had but she could have just cheated and looked at what was in front of us while we were still chomping away.
Worst feeling is visiting a business and feeling like you are annoying them. Maybe this was a one-off. Will be back if I'm ever in this area again. Also wanted to note the parking lot is very packed and very hard...
Read moreUpdated March 2021: Consistently delicious food, friendly staff, and wonderful service all around. Can't wait for the pandemic to end so we can dine in! Am not comfortable dining in right now, and am pleased they are still only open for take out. Much safer! Thank you! They have a rewards system which is nice!! But the food items are things I don't usually order/like so not sure I'll benefit at all. Missing the Hawaiian Roll :(
Update July 2020: Have ordered take out a couple of times from Ginza now. They are consistently the best sushi place! I won't go anywhere else if Ginza is an option.
Try the Hawaiian Roll for something refreshing and tasty as heck. Or literally anything else on their menu. Their Vegi Sunomono Salad has avocado in it! Ginza is the only sushi place I've experienced this. I'd go back just for that, honestly. Fantastic!
Prices are reasonable and competitive, and everything always tastes fresh.
They are open for take out and delivery during the pandemic. Orders are picked up right at the door where they have a plexiglass barrier. No guests are able to enter the store (which I appreciate). It works pretty well actually.
Original review, summer 2019: A wide selection of dishes and rolls. I went by myself so only tried a veggie sunomono salad and the Lion King roll (both delicious) but will definitely return with friends so I can try more things.
Servers were pretty persistent with getting my order before I was done looking at the menu (it's big, and I struggle with decision-making) but they were...
