I had been looking for a nice Mexican spot in downtown Quebec and this was rated highly.
My wife, daughter and I visited on a hot summer day and were a little surprised to find the street this place is on completely ravaged by construction to the point where it’s not traversable except on foot! I’m sure this will eventually pass but it’s worth noting.
We made a reservation but likely didn’t need to. We were greeted promptly and our waitress was very friendly. She even suggested getting different plates and sharing. My daughter got a pulled pork quesadilla, I got beef birria tacos and my wife got Al pastor tacos.
These are small plates with three small tacos/quesadillas on them. We also got guacamole to start which came with chips - it was tasty but the chips were a little bland and there weren’t enough in the bowl to finish the dip, so we had to ask for more, which they happily provided.
We all split our meals up to share and agreed the quesadilla was best, with the cheese adding a lot to the dish. My beef birria tacos were great too (love the consommé) and we were expecting the al pastor to maybe be the best , but they were our least favorite. Still tasty though.
We finished off our meal with some freshly made churros and I’ve never met a hot churro I didn’t love. This was no exception.
In the end, although not a “big”’ meal, we thought the prices were fair and the food was tasty and we certainly...
Read moreThe best Mexican food far and wide. During our short stay in Québec, we came across this great restaurant. My girlfriend suffers from coeliac disease, which is why we are always on the lookout for gluten-free options. All dishes in this restaurant are gluten-free. We managed with difficulty to get a table reservation at a late hour. When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by very friendly waiters and shown to our table. There are not many seats, but enough. We found the volume unpleasant. It was also very warm in the restaurant. But the food was a real highlight. We ordered a variety of tacos, quesadillas and churros for dessert. In terms of taste, they were the best we've eaten so far. The tacos were incredibly tasty and the individual ingredients were perfectly balanced. The gravy for the quesadillas was very aromatic and went perfectly with the dish. And the churros are the secret star among the delicious dishes. They didn't taste gluten-free at all, were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the dulce de leche was the perfect complement. The churros were so good, in fact, that we ordered them to go the next evening. Fortunately, there are non-alcoholic beers and even Mexican cola to drink. A big compliment, also for the...

Most Mexican food is GF anyway but Julio Taqueria is just GF, good food. My wife got the lunch special which included a taco dish (3 tacos), a side of guac with some chips and a fresca drink. She got carnitas tacos which were just right but the sauces are game changers. That orange habanero is just insanely delicious and hot 🔥! I got the Al pastor which were also really good - the pineapple balanced the heat beautifully. The chips were thick and crisp and the guac was perfect. She got the Jamaica drink though we're not sure what it was exactly, it tasted kind of cherry and was really tasty.
So my wife has been GF for about 19 years now but she wasn't super adventurous before so she'd never had a churro. We ordered the churros. We loved the churros. There's a decent number of them in the bowl for $8 and they definitely need the dulce de leche to cut the greasiness.
Total with tax and tip was just over $50 which, let's face it, isn't bad for 2024. Especially when you're basically guaranteed a safe GF meal. Highly recommend this place! Oh, btw, we parked on the street nearby in the 1h free parking spot and were out before the time was up.
See you...
