Ok. I was hungry so the deck was a little stacked against Captain George’s Fish and Chips in Trenton, Ontario, Canada. I’m grumpy when I’m hungry and food often does nothing more than satisfy my need for calories. However, every once in a long while fate is kind to even the grumpiest of customers. First, the woman at the order counter, Farrell, was both kind and patient as I wandered through the menu. She answered my questions quickly and precisely without sounding rushed or annoyed so A+ for customer service. I ordered a piece of Cod with French fries (chips) to go. The food was ready in an appropriate amount of time and even though my time now allowed me to stay and eat, Farrell was gracious and quick to turn my take out order into a relaxed meal at a table. Now for the food. The fries were warm to the point of almost too hot to eat, done to a delicate golden brown, with a crunchy exterior that hadn’t hollowed out the potato from over-frying and not even a hint of extra fry grease. So Chips, A+! The slice of Cod was about the size of half a football so the price of the meal was fair based on the portions. The Cod was lightly battered and fried to a lovely yellow-gold color. It was just firm enough to maintain the shape of the filet but broke apart with the gentle pressure of my fork releasing steam full of the aroma of home and family and nights out with your pals. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice and a shallow dunk in tartar sauce completed the preparation for what I can only call a mouthful of joy. Fish, A++! If your meal at Captain George’s is only half as good as mine just was you will still have had a terrific meal. I’m already looking forward to...
Read moreHoly, attitude Lady. I'll start this review positive. The food was great. I had the salmon burger and it was juicy and not over flowing with tartar sauce. My mother had cod and a salad. Both of these items were displayed specials. We ordered at 2:05 p.m. and at 2:35 we still hadn't gotten our meals. Oddly, a group of three women who came in after us got all their food before us. But that isn't why I'm giving two stars. At 2:35 my mother and I realized we were going to late for a doctor's appointment. So we went up to the counter and said unfortunately we had to go because it was taking too long and we were going to be late. Instead of apologizing for the delay she became extremely defensive and said that the salmon burgers take a long time to cook and that's what we had ordered. Two things: 1. Salmon burger was listed as a special item, it was fair to assume it would be readily available. 2. You don't blame the person who is giving you their money. You say "I'm sorry it is taking long than you expected. Our salmon burgers take longer to cook." Not only did she become very defensive to us, she was loudly defensive to us in front of the rest of the restaurant. Luckily our food WAS ready at this point and we inhaled it. To make matters worse, as we inhaled we could HEAR HER in the back chirping us for having the audacity for asking about our food after waiting 30 minutes. On a $24 lunch I gave a $2.50 tip. I think that was more than generous. I gave that tip because the food was good and she gave us a cup of water for our dog outside. We won't...
Read moreThis is a hidden gem in Trenton. Our family decided to explore the city on Sunday and found this Fish and Chip shop somewhat by accident. Very reasonably priced and hot and flaky fish. We had the Halibut Family package of 4 pcs of fish + small fries, a side order of poutine, and the calamari appetizer. Calamari was fresh and crunchy, not stringy or chewy. Fish was light and crispy with generous portion sizes. Fries were exceptionally good. Deep fried to a golden brown crisp. Couldn't stop eating them and I am very restrictive on my carb intake. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try the poutine because my wife at it all before I could try. Apparently that is good also. Highly recommended. Worth the drive to Trenton and definitely worth the detour off the 401 if you are passing by. Lots of free parking. It was empty when I got there at around 4 PM but apparently I was lucky because the lot was pretty full by 5 PM when we left. There is street parking also available and a patio overlooking the St. Lawrence inlet. Beautiful location to spend the day. Right next to the big arch bridge on Dundas Street. Located at the SW corner of Dundas and Front/Fraser Park Drive. Staff was friendly and fast also. Will go again and bring my Mom from Hamilton who also loves Fish and Chips. I'm telling co-workers in Ottawa about...
