Sunset Grill — Restaurant in Red Deer

My mom and I came here about 5 months ago prior to the new ownership. We had a great experience with good service and good food. We attempted to come back when they were closed and therefore did not come back again until today when we noticed they were reopened.

However, we did not have a good experience this time. At the door, we were told to sit ourselves which we did. We then waited 10-15 minutes for service as the two servers were focused on cleaning two dirty tables, to note there were only about 4-5 tables of the approx 20 tables with guests at that moment so they were not pressed to clear the tables. Eventually, we had to ask the server for service ourselves. We ordered drinks, one drink was missed. That was fine, they brought it some time later but it was not quick. When we ordered our food, my mom repeated her order of simple eggs, toast, and sausage several times. When our food came, my mom received bacon instead of sausages. All the food on my mom’s plate (eggs, hash browns toast, and sausage once replaced) were cold. The sausages did not appear to be completely cooked.The toast was served plain, not even buttered. My hash browns were cold. I asked for a refill on my water several times and never received one. Again, there were not many people in the restaurant. I totally understand if we were to have to wait during a rush hour, but this was not the case and the servers were frequently seen simply chatting behind the front counter. In addition, when we went previously the portions were quite big and justified the price as it was very filling. This time the portions were quite skimpy, I think I had about 10-15 chunky hash browns on my plate.

Also, the bathrooms were quite filthy and in disarray. There was dirt caked in every corner and the toilets were quite gross.

While I enjoyed the restraunt when I went previously, this last visit determined that I will not be visiting again. Between waiting over 40 minutes just for a waiter to even stop at our table to take our drink order, it took him another 20 to actually bring them. I understand being busy on mother's day, but when i see the same waiter stopping at the tables beside us several times before even acknowledging us is ridiculous. Then he left without taking our order. When we finally got our food, it was all cold and was brought out two plates ever 5-10 minutes. By the time it was all brought out, those who got their food first had either let it sit to get even colder or were finished by the time I received my food last. The food itself was not worth the price they charge and especially since before the portions were big and filling and this time they were skimpy and left me wishing i hadn't ordered at all. Everyone who ordered eggs agreed the eggs were rubbery, and my grandmother's toast was so dry and over cooked she snapped it like a cracker and most likely would have chipped a tooth eating it. Great friendly service but food was just so so. The waitress was apologetic and explain they had a new cook in the kitchen; further to apologize by giving us a discount on our bill. I reply I understood that training new kitchen staff to get the hang of cooking multi things on the grill takes practice. The atmosphere was nice, bright, open and fairly clean. Service was friendly and good; she checked on us multiple times and ask for our honest opinion of our meals with a friendly attitude she didn’t get defensive in a aggressive natural just politely explain they were experiencing a new cook on the grill. I hope the food is better next time instead just being okay. Eggs in the wrap was overcooked to the point dry and crumbly plus the potatoes in the wrap was way too chunky Ask for well doned home fries gotten too extra well doned to the point of being dry and hard Pancake wasn’t fluffy most likely the pancake batter being too thin Home fries tasted unseasoned The French toast on the other hand was well doned; it was nice a golden brown with a nice light crisp exterior while the inside stay nice...
