COBS Bread — Restaurant in Richmond Hill

I visited this store recently to purchase some baked goods for my family. One of my family members has celiac disease, so I specifically asked whether they offered any gluten-free options. The staff member I spoke to confidently told me that EVERYTHING in the store was gluten-free. This immediately raised concerns for both me and my boyfriend, so I asked again—twice—just to be sure. She assured me both times, even after checking with another team member.

However, after looking at COBS Bread’s official website, I saw that it clearly states all products contain gluten.

I understand that COBS is a bakery that specializes in bread, so maybe it seemed like a silly question to ask—but many bakeries today do offer gluten-free options, so I thought it was worth checking. What’s far more concerning, though, is that I was given completely false information, repeatedly and with confidence.

This kind of misinformation is extremely dangerous, especially when it comes to serious medical conditions like celiac disease. It was evident to me that the staff at this location did not have accurate knowledge of the products they’re selling, particularly when it comes to allergens. I find it deeply concerning that none of the other employees nearby stepped in to correct the misinformation, even though they heard the conversation.

Food allergies and sensitivities are not something to be taken lightly. I urge management to ensure that all staff are properly trained and informed about the ingredients and allergen information of the products they serve. I’ve seen people compare COBS Bread to Paris Baguette, but honestly, that’s not a fair comparison. COBS is not a café-style bakery — it’s where you go to buy fresh, high-quality loaves, buns, scones, and other baked goods to enjoy at home. Their breads are baked daily, and they’ll even slice your loaf to your preferred thickness — perfect for freezing and using every day.

This location offers a great selection of breads, and the service is just as impressive. The staff are incredibly friendly, patient, and helpful — Freda is one of the standout team members. The owner couple is also very warm and welcoming. You can tell they care deeply about the quality of the products and the customer experience, which really sets this location apart.

Some of my go-to favourites:

Loaves: Whole Wheat, Cinnamon Raisin, High Fibre — all moist, flavourful, and consistent.

Buns: Their hot dog buns are soft, slightly sweet, and the perfect size for sandwiches.

Challah: I’m excited they’ll be bringing back Challah soon — it’s one of my all-time favourites.

Sweet items: The mini cinnamon rolls are the perfect size for a quick treat, and the Apple Licious (apple ring bread) is absolutely delicious.

Bagels: Their bagels have a texture and taste you just can’t find in regular supermarkets — soft, chewy, and so good.
