First impressions weren’t the best because I felt that the service was quite disorganized. Perhaps it was the grand opening and they were training new staff, but the order did take quite a while to receive the food. It did affect a bit of my experience, but I found it nice to receive from pickled vegetables on the house. It distracted my hunger for a bit and was a nice palate cleanser since all the dishes I ate were quite rich in flavour.
Beef shank noodle soup: I ordered the large with no spice and wide noodles, and I found it still pretty flavourful for having no spice. Additionally, I feel like wider noodles feel better to chew on especially when you have a heavier broth like this. As you can tell from the picture, the large was insanely huge and had a lot of meat chunks. While the meat could’ve been softer, I would say this dish can easily feed two people.
Sliced beef in scallion pancake with sweet paste: the outside was nice and chewy, which I found interesting since usually whenever I tried these dishes at other restaurants, they usually are much more crispy to the point where I cut my mouth from it sometimes. I found the roll a bit hard to pick up as it wasn’t completely wrapped and it fell apart before I could pick it up. However, I do like the flavours of the beef and the sauce.
Gyoza (4 pcs): I would say my only minor gripe was that the top of the Gyoza when it’s pinched is a tad too thick. Other than that, the Gyoza was stellar! It was bursting with juices, had a nice filling to wrapper ratio, and was nice and crispy with that golden colour.
Conclusions: I’ll come back when they ironed out their service and operations, and to try more of the side dishes since surprisingly, I found them more delicious than the main dish (the...
Read moreUpdated 2025.08.04. Service was somewhat lacking, with just one server. Repeated requests for more tea. Pork Rice was alright, but nothing more, the same with the pork with cabbage dumplings.
Updated 2025.07.30 Lao Shan Dong, we came across this restaurant on our way to/from the Skytrain Brighouse station. Passing by, I noticed how busy the restaurant was during lunch gazing through the window.
On Fridays and Saturdays the restaurant closes at 2300, Sundays through Thursdays the restaurant closes at 2200. Established in 1949 in Taiwan, they are best known for their homemade noodles. This is their second location, their first location is in Burnaby.
Upon entry, we were greeted with a friendly face and smile, the place was busy, but several tables were available for seating, no waiting. A free appetizer was brought to our table, and asked whether we wanted water or tea. Choose the tea, it's lightly sweet Oolong with Osmanthus, imported from Taiwan.
The drunken chicken appetizer was a nice starter. The chicken was not overcooked, dry. The fried pork chop rice was alright, I liked their pickled cucumber that came along with the pork chop rice.
Their wonton noodle with bone broth has an excellent bone broth base. Their noodles were alright, the wonton wasn't anything noteworthy about it. Should have followed the suggestion of their beef brisket noodles, next time.
We had a very enjoyable dining experience here. Credit...
Read moreI was a huge fan of their location across from Metrotown years ago and was so sad it closed. When I heard they reopened, I excitedly hurried there to give their new one a go (note: both the former and current locations are owned by the same folks as The One Restaurant in Burnaby)
I ordered the regular size beef shank noodle (15.00). You can choose between different noodle types (we got normal and wide noodles) and your level of spiciness, and though didn't find spicy to be that much hotter.
The broth is very beefy and flavourful and the noodles had a good chew. However, I found the beef to be completely lacking in flavour. Although tender, it didn't have any of the delicious flavour from the broth. If you're a bigger eater, the regular portion would not be enough for you.
We also got a side order of marinated dry tofu (5.00). This was very disappointing as it seemed like they took a raw block of dry tofu from a package, drizzled some sauce on it then plated it. It was really tough to eat.
They also serve complimentary pickled. I found these to be a bit too vinegary and could've probably used a pinch of salt to offset the vinegar.
The servers here, although not rude, were quite disorganized. There were frequent orders mix ups with tables and even when we got our food, a server tried to insist we had a third order of food and tried to...
