Cilantro 601 was a surprise decision we took after The Madras Cafe was closed today.
It's in Riverview and there is parking available and it wasn't much busy when we had visited today.
The atmosphere was okay, it was air conditioned and decorated with different painting and art pieces from India.
So this is basically the second South Indian Restaurant in Moncton after The Madras Cafe which personally for me feels like would give them a good competition especially regarding the prices. They have been open in Riverview for over 4 months now.
Just to give a bit more clear info to the fellow Canadians and immigrants living in Moncton, when I say South Indian restaurant, this one specifically is more oriented to the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, than something like The Madras Cafe which is more oriented towards the South Indian state Kerala.
The service was okay as there was only one person to serve us, this was understandable as we were the only ones there at that time which is why i have given 3 star rating for the service, but have to say the server was really friendly and courteous and was good in communicating and listening to our queries.
Coming to the food, we had ordered Vada (3pcs) for starters which were cooked perfectly not fried too much but just perfect, crispy and delicious.
Then we ordered Mysore Masala Dosa, Schezwan Chicken Noodles and Ghee Masala Dosa. The Mysore Masala Dosa is the spicy variant of the normal Masala Dosa and it is prepared according to your spice recommendations. There is something called the Karam Masala Dosa which is much more spicier than the Mysore Masala Dosa but we were fine with the Mysore Masala Dosa. The Ghee Masala Dosa is just another variant of Masala Dosa with bit more ghee added to it. Both the Dosas and the noodles were really good especially the Mysore Masala Dosa which were made to perfection and delicious.
Finally we ordered the South Indian Coffee which was my personal favourite and the highlight of the experience here. This coffee was so good that it resembled exactly the type of coffee I used to have back in the South of India.
Overall would absolutely recommend this place to all the Canadians and immigrants of Moncton who are lovers of Indian Cuisine. You can go in confidently and eat from here. Will be coming back for more. Thank you for having me and...
Read moreYummy! To try out the restaurant, we ordered takeout: Chicken 65, Lamb Chukka, Veg Special Platter with Naan, Butter Chicken, Lamb Vindaloo, and Parotta Bread. The chicken 65 was tender and crispy with spices. It was very good, I only wish they would also offer it with the tangy lime sauce, or maybe I’m thinking of 555. Anyway, the lamb chukka reminded me of the chettinad I’ve had at other restaurants but have never been able to get right at home - and it’s my absolute favorite. 😢 It was a little too strong with curry leaves so the aftertaste was a little bitter, but so close to perfect and the lamb was crazy tender. The chickpea curry was mild and seasoned well - nothing outrageous but good. The butter chicken was good but just a little too sweet, and it came with plenty of chicken. And finally, the vindaloo had beautiful spicing and tender lamb, but it needed more spice and vinegar, to kinda set your mouth on fire. The parotta was pretty good but the naan was not our favorite. Everything had beautiful Indian spices that created lovely flavors and were very close to perfect. They supplied us with plenty of rice - thank you for that generosity because other restaurants charge for rice. The food was fresh and the bathroom was clean (good sign) and the person I dealt with was friendly. I would definitely order from here again and try other dishes, and I would ask door...
Read moreWe heard a lot of great things about this restaurant so we decided to give it a try. Well aware that there is no such thing as authentic indian food in this city, we were willing to give this restaurant a shot.
Disappointed to say the least. Overpriced for the quantity. (We did take out). The lady working the counter clearly didn’t want to be there. It was mid-afternoon and the restaurant was empty, so not sure why she couldn’t answer questions about the menu.
Anyways, almost $6 for half a cup of lassi is ridiculous! we were still hopeful when we could smell the food in the car. Got home and everything was sweet.
How is a biryani sweet? Butter chicken, i understand it is not catered to the indian audience. But Biryani? Come on! You can do better. The flavours were there! They were! But why was it sweet?
We will still go back because my husband was excited about a few Andra cuisine things he saw on the menu which is rare for moncton. Maybe that will change our opinion.
Please do justice to your food. There is potential there. There is a difference between spice & spicy! Totally understand locals not being able to handle spicy food. But at least don’t make things bland/sweet.
I don’t like leaving harsh reviews but when you spend close to $60 for 3 things, you expect some satisfaction from the food...
