TLDR: our waitress gaslighting made an already difficult (and sympathetic) dining experience so much worse.
First time going to this restaurant, for my birthday, with 2 kids. Context: the kitchen was in total disarray. Based on waiters and the owner, 1) no meat was served at the cooking level asked by customers, 2) orders had huge delays, and 3) the kitchen included a lot of new staff members. My rating is NOT based on these out-of-control elements, which no restaurant is immune to.
Our waitress was purposefully not clear about extras being charged based on "choices" she was verbally listing. I picked a garnished oven potato from her list of side choices (which she never mentioned would be extra charge to order), and I ordered a filet mignon. When she asked me if I wanted bone-in or out, I asked her how different these 2 options were. She said that one had the bone (which she totally recommends as the more delicious option) and the other didn't. So I ordered bone-in, which I thought would be nice to try for the first time. When I got my food 1:15 hours later, I accosted a different waiter to question the cut & cooking of the meat (well done instead of medium rare). He's the one who told me that bone-in was 150% the price of the other, and 14oz instead of 8oz. When I confronted the waitress about it, she made it sound like it was my fault for not knowing about it, that she couldn't possibly remember the prices from the menu and tell me about these things (the other waiter did no problem, but okay...), that it was clearly on the menu. She still took it away due to the wrong cooking level, and got back another 25 minutes later with a regular filet mignon (8oz) instead, which is the amount of meat I was prepared to eat originally.
The owner offered us desert free of charge due to the delays & cooking issues. I picked the cheesecake, and I got a mason jar that had a layer of grahan crust at the bottom, then 2 dense twirls of whipped cream (did not taste like a whipped cream made from real cream) with layers of strawberry jelly in between. I validated by taste that there was no cheesy-flavour anywhere before getting the waitress again and tell her that the cheesecake was missing from the jar. She just looked at me as if I had never gotten a cheesecake before, and told me that I had to get to the bottom of the jar to get the graham crust at the bottom, which should definitely confirm that THIS was a cheesecake. When I insisted that crumbs are not what makes a cheesecake (the cheese does), she offered me to bring me a chocolate mousse instead as a way to clear the whole situation.
Had it not been for the waitress seizing opportunities to tack on extra fees (I did not argue the potato extra when we got the bill, I was too eager to get out after 2:30 hours in there with 2 young kids), and refusing to take my concerns about their food seriously, it could have been a place where I would go back to for a special occasion. I don't think I want to go back to get treated...
Read moreI have mixed feelings about Boeuf Cochon. Their steaks are delicious , and their prices are very reasonable. I have had a couple of experiences that have frustrated me though. I feel like service is very friendly--until there's an issue. One time the steak was medium instead of medium rare. I'm very particular about how I like my steak cooked. The waitress tried to help, but one of the managers returned the same steak to the table and would not get me a new steak. Then the other manager came out, and he was not pleased either. Both managers were clearly put out that I wanted to return the steak. In the end, they offered me extras to compensate, but no change was made, which was deeply frustrating. Another time I ordered a side salad. The salad did not come before dinner. I said I'd like to cancel the salad because the dinner was there, and the server initially refused. He said he wouldn't be able to get rid of the salad from the bill. (Not sure why--at the worst, he would have to delete my order and then re-add just the steak). He said the salad was always supposed to come with the dinner, not before. For me, the issue is pretty simple--1) most people want salad before their main course, so at the very least check with them to see when they want their salad rather than assume they want it with dinner 2) The salad hadn't been made, and my request was not unreasonable, so just graciously cancel the salad rather than push the issue. Again, I felt that the waiter was very put off--I came away feeling like I was expected to be more "accomodating." I will also mention that in the past, there were several times where our bill was not correct. We were overcharged and had to ask that our bill be corrected. The thing is normally I would just not go to Boeuf Cochon, but they have a lot of pluses. It's not easy to find good steaks, and their steaks are excellent and at a fair price. And when things run smoothly, the servers are very friendly and helpful. If Boeuf Cochon dealt with requests like the ones mentioned above more graciously, checked the bill so that there were no errors, (and turned their music down a bit--kind of loud), it would be our go-to place for meals. I'd even add to this review and mention how pleased I was with the...
Read moreVisited twice. It is considered a highly priced restaurant. However they do offer affordable meals. The decor is all new. The seating in booths or tabels with well upholstered comfortable chairs. The silver is folded within a red cloth napkin
In the summer they have outdoor service on the terrace. The location is on the hill overlooking highway 15 north.
My furst visit I took one of the daily lunch specials. Hamburger plate, with crisp fries in a metal basket, the hamburger was served in a bun with lettuce tomato, and red onion strips. I was brought a plate of small cups with mustard, mayonnaise, a pink dressing, and catchup. The soup that came with the special was spinach & artichoke...very good, it was not just green water, it was tangy just a bit spicy....in other words....very good. By the way, if you need some bread with your soup just ask. They have these lovely mini-baguettes just baked, served with spreadable butter.
My server who called herself Number Seven offered generous coffee refills. The deserts came on a tray to choose from. There are only two desserts made on premisses, pudding chaumeur, and a other one that I have not tried yet. The pudding Chaumeur was really very good!
