Dagwood's Diner — Restaurant in Salt Spring Island Electoral Area

I am really disappointed today as we have gone to this Diner a lot as a family and this has been a favourite place of ours and for our children up until now. Today we went in and we unfortunately dealt with a server who was very snarky with us and overall just not a pleasant person to talk to when placing our orders. The attitude was enough to be off putting but we also felt we were deliberately being met with minimal effort to help us get what we needed, we had to search and get most things ourselves as she ignored our table. After we ate we paid for our food and we did not tip. We sat down and waited for our family to finish packing up to go when this waitress came over and in a very rude and snarky way asked us if there was something wrong with the food or service because we did not tip. I have never in my life seen a waitress confront a table for not tipping, it was totally shocking to us. We asked to speak to the owner and he came over and told us that he gave her permission to ask us this. I then told them that this is incredibly unprofessional and it made us feel super uncomfortable for which he just kept saying “I’m sorry you feel that way”. To top everything off, my husband had bits of seafood in his meal from another order, and he cant eat seafood! Overall, we are left feeling super frustrated and upset that one of our favourite restaurants has now been ruined for us due to the awful service and confrontation that we received today. This is a solid diner that keeps me coming back - I order the same breakfast every time because it's consistently good. The staff here work incredibly hard, often serving visitors who may not fully appreciate what it takes to run a busy restaurant on the Gulf Islands. I'd like to see any of you who low rated this space, never worked in a restaurant of any caliber in your existence and may be the type walk in with 6 people in the middle of the rush expecting fast food timing from just one server, one chef and one dishwasher do in this place, amazing staff - also, they make their food fresh to order so be prepared to wait if you come in mid rush 🙃.

I'm not sure what kind of upscale dining experience people expect when they rate this place less than 5 stars. This is honest, straightforward food served by hardworking people. If you're rushing to catch the ferry because of poor planning and find yourself speeding around Salt Spring's winding roads, that's not the restaurant's fault, and also slow down.

My advice: come in, order, eat, tip your server well, and enjoy the experience. Negative reviews based on your own time management issues aren't fair to this establishment.

We came here once before & although the food was basic diner fare, and the service was not speedy, ( we didn't even get offered a refill on coffee, by the time we had finished our breakfast ) the prices were good and the place was very clean, so we attempted to go here again, in September 2021, just after vaccine passports began... ( We are vaccinated. ) The man who "greeted" us, when we opened the door didn't even say hello to us . Just a very abrupt " Are you vaccinated ?" My almost 80 year old father was really put off by the unfriendliness, so he said no, and we ate elsewhere. Perhaps they were just overwhelmed with the new regulations, ?? ...so in all fairness I would give them one more try in the future, but a smile and some friendliness would be helpful !
