A close friend of mine loves this place because it's the only option on Saltspring Island for a small hometown bar where you can almost always run into a friend..
However from what I could see, the staff are quite rude/condescending to anyone they don't know well as a daily regular.. As well as overserving their guests to the point of causing a scene, then kicking them out once they've taken what they can get of their money for booze.
I've seen someone who clearly had been served too much to drink & wasn't even coherent anymore, be cut off & then continue to be served by a different bartender; until they were blamed for starting a fight (talk about an obvious outcome).
I've also seen an elderly gentleman who had been served too much alcohol, be removed from the bar after 'falling out of his chair'.. Once he was gone the staff realized the chair had been broken already.
There are maybe one or two solid people who work at this establishment, so far as I can see the others are acting for their own self-interest in making money & definitely not that of the patrons.

Read moreWe were walking back from "Buzzy's" smoked meat (a must visit), and happened upon The Local. We almost skipped it because we weren't sure they had mixed drinks, but dropped in and had beers and a few mixed drinks. The name "The Local" is so appropriate; we were the only none locals in the place when we arrived. I say when we arrived because by the time we left...we felt like and were welcomed like "locals"! It was open mic day and we sat in with the variety of musicians singing a few times. Unpretentious, friendly, and downright fun! They do not serve food, but food is delivered "no charge" from the owners other establishments...and bringing in a smoked meat sandwich from Buzzy's is welcomed. Looking for a great bar 3 minutes from the main area...this is it! Now one of my favourite bars we can visit by boat. Drop by...you won't be...
Read moreDear tourists: Never eat here. This place orders in their food from Uptown Pizza. We waited around for 30 mins for our food. And then we see a delivery guys pull up. He goes into a backroom with a delivery bag and then 30seconds later our food comes out of the same room. No kitchen at all. What a joke. I later searched up the menu at uptown pizza and its exactly the same, ingredients and all. Except Uptown is cheaper. Food was horrible and greasy.
It stunk like urine, smoke, and beer and the locals who were there were loud, impolite and drunk.
It was a waste of time and money, and I would have gone anywhere else for twice the price. And we should have because we heard after that Ganges has some other...
