I was really looking forward to a great meal/experience after reading all the 5 star reviews on La Gare but it wasn't long before I became disappointed! The atmosphere and patio are spot on, looks great, clean and pleasant to the eye. Not long after being seating, my server presented the menu. As I usually do with new restaurant experiences, I ask what is the restaurant is known for, what is your signature dish? A somewhat general response at first, “…. The seafood is good, the pastas are good….. Our steaks and I feel the same way, are better than The Keg” pronounces my server. Great, I thank her and proceed to look over the menu (by the way it is not available online without some searching and when you do find it, it is outdated). The menu has a good variety to select from, all of which make it a challenge to decide but a good thing in my estimation. I decide to start with the shrimp cocktail along with the rib eye. After all it stands to be a great steak according to my server. I wait for a little while and become uncomfortable with the time it takes for my server to reappear, more time passes. More time passes… there she is, at the bar calculating another servers tabs/tips etc (or so it would appear) … she finally finishes and decides to come to the table with a have heatedly “sorry about that”. I place my order and off she goes. She serves bread which is fresh and scrumptious with their home mixed butter. The shrimp arrives dinner starts. I take a shrimp toss on a bit of their “so called signature sauce” and bite into it discard the tail onto my butter dish. Strike two! It was dry and without taste other than the overly tangy sauce, not impressed at all. I draw the server to the table and proceed to describe how dreadful the shrimp is…. She apologizes and asks if she could replace it. I was certain the same would become of the second order, so I opted for either the baked brie or the escargot and suggested she could decide… both sounded appealing at first glance of the menu. The escargot arrives in good time and it was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My app dish gets removed and now I look forward to the steak. It arrives with a hint of disappointment. The potatoes that were supposed to be roasted appear to have been reheated. They were “wrinkled” and not puffed out as I know roast potatoes to look out of the oven. But no matter the steak is on tap now. I cut into it at the end and it is certainly not cooked to medium rare as I asked but, it’s a pretty thin cut so my hope is that the middle of the steak is properly cooked. Not a chance!!! At this point I can’t believe what I ve experienced. I debate on returning the dish but at this point I’m running short of time to get to my connection with some colleagues, so I grin and bear it. I ate the steak and few potatoes, but they had to be dipped in the sauce. The side of veggies were well cooked, well seasoned and flavorful, they became the signature of the dish, very sad. Overall I can’t say it was a good experience at all, even after the server deducted 25% off the price of the steak, a steak to be superior to that of The Keg. A gesture that, although was appreciated, did not compensate for the the misgivings of the dinner. I’ll likely go back but perhaps next time focus more on their pub food portion of the menu and with some luck, cooking up wings and fries will take on...

We came to this restaurant as a group of about 15 to celebrate a milestone birthday, and what should have been a special evening turned into a complete disaster.
To start, the first round of drinks didn’t arrive until 40 minutes after we ordered. Some in our group ordered Old Fashioneds that were undrinkable – they literally tasted like they were made with Fireball whiskey. My girlfriend ordered a Dark and Stormy and couldn’t take more than a sip. Things only got worse from there.
Our mains took nearly 2.5 hours to arrive. When they finally did, most of the food was cold and tasted awful. I personally had two bites of my meal and couldn’t eat the rest. We raised these issues with our waitress, who we later found out was also the floor and kitchen manager. Despite all the problems, she did absolutely nothing to resolve the situation – not a single item was removed from the bill or even acknowledged properly.
I ended up paying $170 for what was essentially an excuse to stop at McDonald’s for a McChicken on the way home. Save yourself the frustration and go literally anywhere else. This place has no business pretending to offer a quality...
Read moreI have to say the quality in food and drinks has diminished greatly under the new owners. La Gare is priced to be the most expensive restaurant in the whole town. We intended to grab a few drinks and some nachos before exploring the downtown vibes of shediac. We ordered a cocktail each to start and the bbq nachos and what arrived after 30 mins of waiting was 2 very poorly made drinks and the poorest made nachos iv ever had in my life. microwaved ground meat, chewy and plain with barely any cheese. Absolutely No BBQ sauce on the nachos but a weird almost ketchup like sauce in a tiny metal cup on the side it Was also served with a tablespoon amount of sour cream and we were charged 2.50$ for an extra one. They literally do not know how to make the cocktails on their own menu bramble or a long island ice tea. I have to say this place has definitely degraded to a tourist trap. Bring back...
