Really good place for coffee. They use and sell local roasters Transcend Coffee - notably at a very good price for their beans, which are excellent; all the better if you can't make the trek to Whyte ave. Their espresso is typically lighter than most so the flavors are nicely pronouced. Almost all of Transcend's roasts are light. The baristas make a good - if maybe somewhat overpriced - cup, but there shouldn't be any burnt tasting coffee here.
Otherwise I can't say I've ever been very impressed by the food here; I feel their menu could use a change-up. It seems to have been the same for years now. However the various staff I've encountered over the years have pretty much always been excellent and helpful. The vibe overall is funky and cosy. The vault room is cool but will give you a headache (and definitely not recommended if you're claustrophobic!) and I think they need some sound absorption in there to stifle the reverb, personally. It's a weird room but I wouldn't stay in there long due to that.
Otherwise this place is great to hang out, meet up, and drink the best coffee in Sherwood Park.
Update: went back after a few years for a quick brunch and it was quite good. Had the salmon (lox) eggs Benedict with potatoes, and though the potatoes were underseasoned it was all quite good. Perfectly poached eggs & fresh smoked salmon. A bit pricey maybe but nice for a Sunday afternoon bite. They now carry beans from a few different coffee roasters, Roasti used to be one but not sure if they still do, selection was a bit low at this time. Roasti isn't a favorite of mine anyway as all their roasts are pretty dark. Ymmv there. I grabbed some Transcend beans for a throwback as I don't get into Edmonton proper as much anymore and I get a coffee subscription to Rogue Wave these days. But the beans still seem fresh enough, and though I paid a premium compare to my subscription or going to Transcend directly, I fully understand paying a bit for convenience and with a cut going to the Cafe.
Still a nice little place for a meet up, coffee or meal. Glad they're still doing ok as not many proper cafes are left in town, and there are none in my small town nearby (no) thanks to Tim's and Starbucks. Happy to support them when I can and I'd encourage...
Read moreAfter an appointment decided to stay in Sherwood Park and visit a local Café with my book. This location has limited parking since it's in a busy Stripe mall but it's a great location. Wheelchair parking is right out front. Even with the weather being a lil cool out, customers were enjoying the outdoor patio. What a Canadian thing to do. Walked in and it felt like a neighborhood Café; inviting, local hot spot and the place to be. There's a small section with items for sale, bright display case of foods, lots of seating and a happy atmosphere. Decided on their drip coffee, asked and it's a local roaster. Staff let me taste it black first before they added the cream. Coffee to me was a bit bitter, not my favorite. Even with two cream and one sugar I wasn't a fan of the coffee but that is all on preference. Decided on a cinnamon roll with icing. Was asked if I wanted it heated up and I of course said yes. Mentioned how I brought a sandwich and asked if I could eat it inside and she politely told me no. Always best to ask and I was completely okay with their answer. The place was busy and I was going to sit at a big tall table but I lucked out as a couple was just leaving a couch. While moving my coffee I spilt a bit and a kind gentleman offered me his napkin. Thanked him, asked if he's been here before and he said for years. He loves this place and finds that he sees more and more new faces. Though he loves that more are discovering this hidden gem, he also loves that it stays a bit hidden as it gets harder and harder for find a seat. Which I can totally understand. My cinnamon roll came with a container of delicious cream cheese icing. Didn't look like a lot but trust me, being able to spread it generously myself on the cinnamon roll was a treat. I watched as people meet with friends, newborns were brought in and introduced and a group of three generations of woman; grandmother, mother and daughter gathered to have a nice brunch and catch up. I love this type of Café....where coffee and delicious food is served along side a great helping of friendships and family. Also the staff...
Read moreI want to love this place and support local businesses in Sherwood park but rude staff just does not cut it for me. Went out for brunch with my husband, daughter and newborn baby. It wasn’t overly busy for a Saturday morning. The food was okay, coffees were great but this was overshadowed by a very rude staff member. She’d been hovering all meal and really glaring at us. I thought it was because we had kids with us (some places are just not family friendly), and chose to just try and enjoy our meal.
We’d just finished eating, and we’re getting organized to leave when the staff member came to our table a started clearing our plates and told us “you need to clean your table, I’ll do it this time but it’s not my job to do it and next time you need to take your plates to the clean up station.” I was really taken aback, as I had every intention of doing so. And her tone and attitude was downright disrespectful. She totally ruined a beautiful morning out with my family.
I will not be returning, or supporting this place. And I’ll be sure to spread it far and wide that it’s not worth a visit to be treated rudely for subpar food....
