This review is for takeout. We ordered: x1 Beef dip + side of fries x1 Pesto chicken sandwich + side of soup x1 Calamari starter The bad: We are staying *exactly* 60 seconds down the road. Not a long drive. When we opened our food, the fries were stale and miserably hard. Either they were re-cooked twice, or they were sitting for a long time. The one thing I look forward to with a side of fries is eating them hot and crispy. These were just absolutely terrible. We put them straight into the trash bin where they belonged. The good: The service was generally pleasant, and it was an average wait time to get our order (25 mins). The beef dip was really excellent (and hot) and the au jus was just as delicious. The calamari (although small-ish), had great flavour, texture, and was cooked just right. The tenderness of the meat in the pesto chicken was spot-on. We paid $62.67 for our three items. We were thinking to eat here again during our week-long stay in Sooke, however, given the price and the straight-up terrible butchery of the fries, we've chosen to go somewhere else for our next dinner. Keep in mind they also charge a take-out fee if you don't dine in.

Casual, unpretentious bistro a 1-minute walk from Sooke Town Centre. The food was very good - Fresh Salt Spring Island Mussels (on special $15) included two pieces of garlic toast. Large serving size; afterwards, the remaining liquid is like a tasty soup. For dessert I ordered the Blood Orange Sorbet ($8.95) which was a large serving --- 5 scoops! --- topped with blueberry drizzle, blueberries, and fresh mint. Delicious! They have a good selection of beverages; I ordered the Sooke Sangria. It was good and less expensive than some places ($7.95). (I'm not a fan of the cardboard straws, though.) They have a bar/counter side and a dining room. There is also outside seating weather permitting. There is plenty of parking, as well. The service felt indifferent but otherwise OK. That said, it was busy on a Saturday afternoon. As soon as a table vacated and was cleaned/disinfected, there were more guests seated. It's a nice option for a day-trip/afternoon out to Sooke from the Greater Victoria area. Good food, reasonable prices, and casual service.

No change! My original review, 8 years ago, was… can’t get better than this in Sooke. This was my original review! NOW: CYCLISTS BEWARE. A high end electric bike was stolen locked to the side of the building… took 18 minutes, according to the video to saw off the lock. So, I wanted a secure place to park my bike. Told I cannot park my bike up against and locked to the railings just outside, within view of the inside. Double standard though! Because another patron was not told to remove his bike. The sign says, please no bikes on the patio. I was welcomed into Mom’s Cafe to bring my foldable bike after the owner heard the story of the stolen bike at Route 14. We have been patrons, at Route 14, 3 to 4 times a month, spending a lot of money at this place for 8 years. Apparently they are not bike friendly, …well.. apparently not bike friendly to some. *Post Script. No worries there… as I told you… won’t be back.

No problem waiting 30 min. Plus on a surprisingly nonbusy Sunday for quality BUT my prime rib$27 was 50/50 gristle fat and beef. Too hungry and upset to talk to offer of manager after 2 attempts to swallow beef. Went to Stickleback Restaurant where no meal has disappointed while Route 14 went from really good to inconsistent since they opened and portions varied wildly like the 3 pieces of "seasonal veggies" on my plate tonight...carrot piece, broccli piece and something so tiny I can't remember what it was. When I asked server about the veggies prior to ordering, she used the plural when describing the serving so if kitchen ran out server not aware. The positive on the plate was a forkful of tasty mash potatoes. Last attempt to support this place. ECHOING others who only complain to each other and don't bother with social media reviews........ In response to Owners response below, I did tell and Show the server my concern with the meat and DID NOT eat my meal except for One fork of potatoe and the The one carrot. I spoke to server within 3 minutes of getting plate and had no intention of waiting for a redo or other offer at 720pm so told server there was no point in talking to manager. I told her I had no intention of paying $27 for what I was served and was done/Leaving.My disappointment was aggravated by hunger and the long wait and was now out of patience and politeness evaporating... A lifelong response had been to commend or resolve exceptionally good or bad customer experiences in person with exception of tonight. ..The Owners response below of Them selling out of the same meal has zero to do with what showed up on my plate. Glad there were good experiences with the prime rib and that's why I went there. Word of mouth. You don't always get positive reviews in life or restaurant. I am sure your"very hurtful and detrimental" experience will subside and people will continue to fill the seats. Hope the quality control is addressed. Will let the silent critiques know they can contact you. Thanks for response so I could clarify my...

We didn't know we'd be eating here until we drove by, and so glad we stopped in! The chef really knows his/her stuff as my prime rib was cooked to perfection, the radishes were savory (I don't even particularly care for radishes!), the potatoes delectable... Just the right sized portions. Plates were warm--food was just the right temperature... Every table was taken, and the ambiance was friendly with everyone having a great time. The service was quick and friendly. The prices were absolutely appropriate for the quality of the meal. I highly recommend eating here.

UPDATE:. We just happened to be traveling through Sooke again last night and I am compelled to add to this review.

The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive--the wait time for our meal was very reasonable.

And man-O-man was the meal worth the visit. We had the beet salad and maple box salmon and this was indeed another five star meal. I don't know how the chef managed to crisp the tender ends of the veggies and yet keep the other end succulent and tender!?

Portion size might seem to be small, but I personally feel this is a reflection on society's gluttonous addiction to overeating. I savored every bite and left the table wanting more, even though I was comfortably sated... This is perfect; makes me want to go back to try...
