Was on a roadtrip with my wife and dog from California, found out about this restaurant through a friend and we were excited to try this place out.
Came 30 minutes early and parked in the back, ran into an Asian female employee who parked next to me and I asked if it was okay to park in the back and she stated yes but we don’t open for another 30 minutes. I said okay, thank you.
When the restaurant opened we walked towards the back entrance where we were told by the same asian female employee that you need to go around to the front and we don’t allow pets. I said okay… so I went around to the front to ask the hostess if it’s okay we eat out back in the patio area with our dog who was in a stroller, she’s 1 years old and enclosed to the stroller with no possibility of distraction to any other customers, she’s a service animal in the United States and I understood Canada have a stricter requirement. The hostess stated we can have your dog in the back patio area but she would have to be next to the patio by the steps. I was surprised when she showed me where they allowed dogs to hangout while people ate because it didn’t make any difference as it was pretty much 7ft from the table. It’s outside and I have to have my service animal 7ft from the patio?? What difference will that make… after going back inside the restaurant to tell my wife the same employee then approached me to state that I move my truck as it was taking up too much room.. her tone and attitude about every conversation to me was short and impolite. If you have an issue bring up the issues politely and couldn’t you have asked me when you pulled into work and you saw me? You telling me my dog isn’t allowed here but then the hostess stating that there’s an area for my dog, very misinforming and unprofessional.
Whatever you’re going through in life or if your burnt out from work, I understand, life happens but please don’t transfer your negative energy towards your customers who mostly are probably on vacation trying to have a good time. Wife and I were very surprised and never had this kind of treatment in Canada. Especially at a Japanese restaurant who usually carry themselves with higher work ethics...
Read moreBest sushi in Squamish!
The sushi and maki are fantastic, the Ramen is good. The temperature of the rice, the freshness of the fish, the doneness of the fillings are perfect. There is a fresh sheet for dine in with higher end offerings - blue fin for example. The toro sashimi came with fresh wasabi, where regular maki came with the prepared stuff. The price point is average, and the value is excellent from a quality not quantity perspective.
It's Friday night, just after 5pm, and the ~35 seats are full with a line out the door. Service is good, but unable to keep pace with the demand. The phone is ringing off the hook and pick up times are being quoted at 1.5 hours. The sushi is diverse, contemporary, and perfect. There's a tuna poke roll or a spicy tuna with rice crispy like bits on top. I dont think of tradition when I see cilantro in a roll, but it works. The maki are manageable and not gigantic. Vege and vegan options. Where Vancouver is quite literally ranked as a top global spot for sushi, this is a staple and gold standard for quality and value. It's not Miku, but it's not trying to be.
My understanding is the owners had Yuji's Kits (Vancouver), then Sushi Sen, sold and started this - I could be wrong on this. Sushi Sen was a go to, but has gone down hill. Here unlike Sen now, the temperature of the rice is perfect, the batter is light, crispier, and less oily. The vegetable fillings are perfectly cooked.
The ramen noodles are very good, but the broth stylistically is lighter and less dense and oily than a lot of other ramen shops in Vancouver. It's not bad, but a pork bone broth usually has that almost velvety texture. Here it is a lighter and saltier affair. Not bad, just a different style.
Down side are wait times and restaurant size.
If you go here, you're not going to complain about the maki or sushi. The wait times maybe, the cramped room maybe, but not...
Read moreAt the risk of sounding cliché, I rarely write reviews. In the interest of full transparency, this is more of a thank you note, than a review. We aren’t locals, my boyfriend and I came for the outdoor climbing. We’d woken up at 6:00 am, to drive some friends to the airport. The energy drinks and adrenaline came to a crash around 8:00 pm. Famished and somewhat sleep-deprived, our brains were more than a little wonky when we arrived at the restaurant. The waitress took our order, while I was washing my hands. When I return to the table, my francophone boyfriend informed me that he had ordered a 20 piece sushi box. Unfortunately, what arrived was a Chef’s choice sashimi plate. As you can imagine the price points differed widely. With much embarrassment, we explained that we had in fact aimed to order a much less expensive dish. The waitress was incredibly understanding and immediately assumed responsibility. We of course felt awful and assured her that the error was likely on our part. She then asked us to wait a minute, as she wished to speak to the chef before entering our intended order. A mere three minutes later, she offered us the sashimi dish at the price of the more affordable meal we had originally set our sites on. Of course we accepted this very generous offer. Our evening could of easily turned into a pricey and embarrassing debacle. Instead, we were given the opportunity to discover that we had been missing out. Next time, you can be sure. When the chef’s choice of sashimi arrives at our table- it’ll be because we meant...
