Okay, folks, let me tell you about a hidden gem in St. Catharines – The Tangerine Tortoise. Honestly, you could walk right by it and never know you were missing out on some seriously incredible pizza.
This place is run by one guy, and I mean one guy. Chef, server, everything! And let me tell you, he does it all with a smile. Super welcoming, polite, and knows his stuff. You can tell he's passionate about what he does.
We took a chance and dropped in on a Wednesday afternoon, hoping for a pizza. Lucky for us, he had one dough left! Here's the thing – he only makes a limited number of pizzas each day, and they're all timed perfectly with his oven and process. While we were there, the phone was ringing off the hook with reservations. Moral of the story? Don't just drop in! Call ahead and book a spot. We got lucky, but you might not be.
Now, let's talk about the pizza. Seriously, divine. The dough? Unbelievable. Crispy and chewy, with tons of flavor and that perfect leopard spotting on the bottom. The sauce, cheese, and pepperoni were all top-notch. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I honestly wanted to order another one, but sadly, he only had enough dough for one walk-in pizza. That pepperoni pizza was a prized possession, and I savored every single bite.
If you're looking for an authentic, delicious, and truly unique pizza experience, you HAVE to try The Tangerine Tortoise. Five stars...

The Pepperoni pizza is a classic elevated to new heights. The cup-and-char pepperoni adds a smoky, crispy touch, paired beautifully with tasty mozzarella cheese and their rich homemade tomato sauce. Every bite is packed with flavor, making it one of the best pepperoni pizzas I’ve had in the area.
The Asiago & Prosciutto pizza is a creative masterpiece. The homemade garlic cream sauce provides a creamy base, complemented by sweet onions, melted mozzarella, and nutty Asiago cheese. The prosciutto and pistachios add a savory crunch, while the balsamic glaze ties it all together with a tangy-sweet finish. It’s a sophisticated choice that hits all the right notes.
Plus, they have a great selection of drinks to pair with your meal, ensuring you’ll find the perfect sip to hit the spot. Whether you’re craving something refreshing or a bold drink to complement the flavors, they’ve got you covered.

Read moreOur first experience at Tangerine Tortoise could not have been any better. We’ve been meaning to go for a while and finally had an early evening to make our way over. First impression is warm and cozy with the wood interior and Edison lighting, a nice touch. The menu is short - several personal pizza options, a couple salads, a variety of beers and some local wines. For the two of us we ordered the cheese pizza, pepperoni pizza, and the veggie. A glass of red for the lady and a beer (tall boy) for me.
THE PIZZA IS INCREDIBLE.
Full fat mozz just so silky soft and melts in your mouth. The crust is soft, fresh, light - it’s like fresh baked bread… perfect thickness and texture. Pepperoni pizza was well stocked, and cup-n-char, ends were nice and sizzled with the fat collected in the “cup”. Veggie pizza drizzled with pesto, and a wonderful combo of roasted red pepper, onion, cheese and mushrooms.
$70 or so for the two us, this was with a tall pour each, and THREE hand-made pizzas. The sizes are perfect, two people could easily share one pizza, this would bring a bill for two under $40.
This is artisanal cuisine. Robbie is a craftsman. Everything about the Tangerine Tortoise deserves...
