I'm a little late doing this review but since Friday I have been trying to cook all the things that my husband and I had at The Clay oven for lunch that day. First time there and we were blown away! The most amazing Indian food we have had in forever!! Worth every single cent. We ordered the mixed platter for apps with the samosa, onion bhaji, and veg pakora. It was amazing! The flavours omggggg. First time I had a samosa that wasn't dry and the balance.of flavours was perfect. The pakora and bhaji were crispy and light. Not heavy with batter like ive had at ither places. My husband also had the Mulligitawny soup and he loved it as well. After that we had the Beef Korai, Lamb curry, garlic naan, and coconut rice and again omggggg. I'm drooling every time I think of it. I've seen people speak of the prices being high for smaller portions but I'm telling you, there is no substitution for quality ingredients and the food is such a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and savory. We like spicy food so medium spicy dishes were perfect for me. My husband can easily eat the hotter dishes like the vindaloo though. Did I mention the flavour???? Lol sorry not sorry. After we were done our meal our server came out with a complimentary dessert and it's was really good too although I cannot think of the name of it. The owner also came out to talk to us and he was lovely. We all had a great chat about their restaurant and how happy we were with our food. We don't eat huge portions at one time so we were full and still had enough food to bring home and made 4 more meals from it. I wish I could have their recipes to make them at home lol. Since Friday I scoured the internet for recipes and broke out my giant pressure cooker and pizza oven to make my own garlic naan, beef korai, and coconut rice. Tomorrow I'll tackle the pakora and bhaji and green chutney. Lol I think I did pretty good however next time we go out to eat it will definitely be back to the Clay Oven. For a little over $100 we were very satisfied with our meal and experience. ...
Read moreFebruary 14, 2024 It was recommended by my husband’s colleague to try out the Clay Oven in St. Thomas. We really pushed our luck by going there the evening of Valentine’s Day with no reservation. We were so thankful that they gave us a table even though they were filling up quickly! The restaurant was very clean with and beautifully decorated with heart decals on the walls for Valentines. It was a nice touch!! Music was at a nice level. Not too loud, not too soft. (Am I sounding old?! :) Our server was absolutely delightful! When I told her it was our first time there, she replied “I’m here for you!” So nice! She went over the menu with us, and I was so happy to see that everything they offered, with the exception of 2 items, was gluten-free! When I mentioned that I also had a dairy allergy, she assured me that she would find the perfect thing for me. My husband loves very spicy foods, and I am the complete opposite. She recommended our dishes, and she absolutely nailed it!
Appitizer - Vegetable Pakora Entre - Chicken Tikka Masala (she made it extra spicy!) Entre - Chicken Korai (mild for me)
I feel like I am not going to describe the food the way it should be described, but what I can say is that it is authentic Indian cuisine. So flavourful but not overpowering. The flavours from the Indian spices were mind blowing and you could tell that they were using fresh ingredients making the dishes so darn delish. My husband and I will 100% be back at the Clay Oven to enjoy another meal and we are going to be bringing some friends along with us. Thank you again for an awesome experience! How lucky St. Thomas is to have you. Sincerely, Laura & Norm Kelso P.S. I wish I had gotten the name of our server. She was so nice! If she’s reading this, I’m the one that was wearing the pink sweater that you kindly...
Read moreWhen we got there it was a just before five so no one was in the store. We were met immediately by our server and seated. The restaurant is so clean everything looks new (pretty sure it’s a new business). We were seated drinks brought immediately with menus. I had questions about heat which were answered and we ordered. The food was excellent!!! The starter App I’m still not sure how to describe it but I’ll try- dipping chips into I think a mint something (I know not very helpful sorry). It was actually pretty good! The chips(?) were huge and you just break off a piece an go. Then our order came..The Naan bread is fresh made Without burnt holes and a great thickness!! I’m truly a fan of good baked Naan!! The Chicken Tikka Masala was fantastic! With lots of big chicken chunks(they did not skimp on chicken in this dish), amazing colour in the dishes we both had (I can’t remember what my buddy had, but he was still talking it happily for two days and posted a review on his FB as he’s not Google friendly.) the desert (forgive my white girl dumb explanation here please) looked like a Tim bit in a honey sauce, I’ve had it warmed before and this one was served cold. Either way it was still freaking great and I ate both (buddies diabetic not my fault but definitely my gain on that one)! Our server was attentive with our intrusive and answered everything we asked of him. All in all definitely going back! Note the coconut rice has coconut bits in it, not just made with coconut milk/juice. Thats not something I’m used to and since I dont like actual coconut in my rice I’m adding it so you know when you order. It threw me and I ordered a plain one went great with my food. Hope you try them out, the ones I met seem like very nice people, and I wish them Good luck in the...
