*Updated Review after Umami Response" While my review remains unchanged, I want to clarify some points after their aggressive response.
I don’t take notes during meals, but after a server used a dirty rag to clean my table, I felt compelled to document my experience. I have the receipts to prove my visit. My intention was never to harm Umami; I simply wanted to share my experience.
Umami claimed to check on my visit date, but I delayed this review since I went the last week of July. There check wasn't possible unless they have a way to check my attendance via Google Maps. I moved to Cloverdale recently and hoped to explore local sushi spots. Given Umami's 4.4 rating, I was surprised by my negative experience. I initially held back but decided to share the truth of my visit in the hopes of prompting improvement.
Instead of acknowledging my concerns, Umami accused me of being a "bad actor." I mentioned the location only for context, not to discredit the Surrey location. My review is based on my actual experience—poor service, health concerns, a wobbly table, and being ignored.
If the staff had taken a moment to address my needs, this could have turned out differently. Instead, I felt dismissed. I’m disappointed that rather than seeking to understand, Umami chose to accuse me. I've since found better sushi experiences and won't be returning. I wish this exchange had been more constructive. My reviews aim to be honest and helpful, and I hope Umami can improve their service consistency moving forward.
If they shown they wanted to improve I would've taken my review up to 3 stars but they've decided to go the other way and in turn so have I. This CAN always be changed though. "redacted original review below*
"Soooo.. let's talk about this Sushi Spot" Not Good.
Here's your list of Not so good things: (as the service spiraled more downhill I started taking my own notes)
-Cleaned my table in front of me with Dirty Rag that fell on the floor. As they were "busy" I had to use my own microban cleaner to wipe the table to ensure a surface safe for eating. Disgusting.
-Sat me down to a wobbly table cause they wanted to keep the 4top available even though nobody else sat in one of the 3 available 4 tops. When I asked about the stable 4top they said "NO" because they get busy. It didn't get busy.
-I was ignored at first when I stated I was ready. 10 minutes had passed before someone came to my table so I could place my order.
-Service in general is sub par which seemed strange for a 4.4 rated restaurant.
-took 20mins from being sat down to receive water or tea. So I'm including the following: 5min wait to be seated in a 1/3 seated restaurant. means 25mins no water, no tea, no food. In other restaurants I'd be midway through my meal at this point. I understand being busy but one would believe the seated customer should be treated with more respect and attention then take out customers. Server was VERY detached and not there to enhance the dining experience whatsoever. One would would hope the Food would be great to make up for the bad service. This would explain the high rating... right? NOPE.
*Tea Warm *Miso Warm *Water was warm tap water (I had to ask twice for ice) *Ebi Sunomono bland, boring and mushy noodles. Included 1 slide of cucumber and shrimp so portion was just.. bad. *Bento Box - sub par at best. Everything cold. Beef Teriyaki, bad meat cuts, oversweet sauce from a bottle. *Based on food reviews it was all Overpriced.
This has to be one of the worst Sushi restaurant "eat-in" experiences I've ever sat down to. Don't believe the rating. There's definitely something up here. Never had a situation where the rating was this high compared to the actual sit down service. Avoid this UMAMI. The one in... .
I recommend nothing here except to avoid it. Your not a patron.. just someone with money they're trying to take from you.
Be Better...
Read moreWe have been ordering takeout for several years since we live close by. I was hugely disappointed with they way our order was handled yesterday. My husband ordered at 5pm, was told ready to pick up in 30 minute. I arrive 5 minutes early, told ready in 5 and asked to sit. A few minutes later, I paid with a good tip, and told ready in 3 minutes. Five minutes go by, then 10 and 15, now going on 20 minutes. Tell the hostess this, she offers tea, I say no just want the order. A lady after me, has also sat for 10 mins waiting for her order. To my surprise she gets hers before me and leaves. Finally I’m called and I make sure it’s the correct order. Hostess is shocked when she realizes she has given my order to the lady who left. She calls the lady to explain what happens, lady will return. Meanwhile others have come in to pick up their orders. Hostess tells me kitchen will prepare fresh order for me. Now it has been 35 minutes. Lady returns with my order, hers is given to her and she leaves. Finally 40 minutes later, my correct order is finally given to me. I was very surprised there was no offer to reimburse or extra food for waiting almost an hour. I have never been more disappointed in a restaurant as I was with this one. One weak apology does not make up for bad customer service and lack of ...
Read moreWorsed restaurant experience ever in canada. I left this place hungry and antsy...I don’t understand how they have a 4.4-star rating. The photos in the reviews below are completely different from what we ordered. Use caution when trusting the reviews. In my opinion, if you’re looking for ramen, you should try somewhere else. The ramen I know uses pork broth and "hand-pulled" noodles, which can be made by machines as well, not hard to get. However, their ramen used soy sauce water and instant noodles—something you could easily make at home for $2. So they served me Ramyeon instead of Ramen. I only had a few bites of the soup and paid full price $13! . The chef argued that it’s just a different style, but I won’t be coming back for this style again, It felt very cheap, unhealthy (you know instant noodles are deep fried ) and too easy to make. Ramen should be soothing, comforting, and nutritious. We don’t eat out for something that can be prepared at home in a...
