Calico Coffeehouse — Restaurant in Thunder Bay

Me and my friends usually come here all the time to study. Recently the service is horrible. I came in and sat down for 5 minutes waiting for a friend and they approached me asking if i was going to buy something. I responded yes I am just waiting for someone and they asked how long it would be and I said 10 minutes. Exactly 10 minutes later right before my friend came they came back again and asked the same question. Once my friend got there we both ordered drinks and food and about 1.5 hours later we were approached and said that if we don't order something else we will need to leave. This is absolutely not acceptable and for customers you shouldn't treat them this way. If Calico has a rule, put up a sign and make it visible and let the customers know they can't stay. At this time there was tables and booths still open too, not busy at all. I've always loved this place for visiting with friends and studying however, I recently had a bad experience. My friend and I were studying, both purchased coffees and a scone. After studying for a bit we had a friend visit who also purchased something. After that friend had left we were approached by one of the employees telling us we needed to get something else or we had to leave. She told us they had a '3 hour rule' which I've never heard of in all the years I've been coming here AND it is not posted anywhere so we weren't aware we had to follow it. After saying we were fine and would leave soon, we were approached AGAIN saying we had to buy something. Keep in mind it was not busy and we are still loyal paying customers. There were also others that were there for longer than 3 hours too. Sadly, I now feel uncomfortable going to a place I used to really enjoy. I do not feel welcome and I will be SURE to spread this experience with everyone I know because it's awful...

The place is super clean and I do love the atmosphere. The coffees are nice and flavorful and not too heavy in terms of syrups.

The staff was wonderful. However, unlike other cafes, they would gently remind you to purchase more than one beverage if you are staying there for an extended amount of time. While it is completely understandable as this is taking up space that could be used for other customers, it should not be reminded by the staff.
