Went in this morning, barista was talking to what seemed to be some out of town customers but they weren’t actually buying anything and the barista wasn’t actually making or selling anything. Fine, continue your conversation and what you’re doing but we are paying customers waiting to be seen. Over heard the barista tell them about her making a facebook post and pulled her phone out, while talking to the ladies she was making a Facebook post and on her phone. Kept talking to the ladies about recommendations for breakfast, something about her favorite places in Thunder Bay and her husbands, etc.
When we walked in we didn’t get anything, not a “hi” not a “I’ll be with you in a second” literally nothing. My brother and I stood there between 5-10 minutes waiting for the barista to atleast acknowledge us but that never happened, she carried on with her conversation as if we weren’t even there. We ended up walking out and going to Calico Coffee house which was amazing service and coffee! Will debate trying again but this left and terrible taste in my brother and i’s mouth for this local place. Atleast acknowledge your customers when...
Read moreCan every city do this please? I can’t stop thinking about how incredible this entire concept is. A volunteer run, community driven coffee shop focused on giving back — and with out-of-this-world coffee and baked goods, all housed in a beautiful church. I love the mission and how this has been brought to life. I came in for coffee, but left wanting to know so much more about the Urban Abbey and the community served (their website is full of info). But let’s get to the experience: I went two days in a row while visiting Thunder Bay. Both days I was greeted by genuinely kind and friendly staff. They made incredible drinks, had great suggestions for my 14 year old son, and we somehow arrived right as fresh baked goods were coming out of the oven. So good. I drink my coffee black and avoid fruity undertones. Their medium roast coffee was smooth and perfect. The space feels welcoming, cozy, and has beautiful artwork and stained glass windows. I love the pews as benches and the tables that mimic the shape of the windows. I appreciate the mix of new/modern with treasured/lived in. It’s perfection. I can’t...
Read moreThe Habit is my absolute favorite coffee shop in Thunder Bay! The coffee shop offer ample parking, but can be crowded during the morning and afternoon hours. The coffee shop was created out of a renovated baptist church, and the interior furnishings transferred from the century old church can be seen throughout the establishment. The seating even includes old church pews! The food and beverages served here are nothing short of exceptional. Their lattes and cappucinos are some of the best in the city! They also have a great selection of pastries to go with your drink! The ambience in this cafe makes for a great place to study! The staff are also friendly, and clearly take passion in their work! I would highly recommend this...
