I recently dined at Hype BBQ in Scarborough, and I must say, it was one of the most frustrating dining experiences I've had in a long time. From the moment we walked in, things started going downhill. The service was incredibly slow; it took ages for our order to be taken and even longer for the food to arrive.
To add insult to injury, the prices were outrageous. I was shocked to see that they charged $5 for a single stick of chives. Yes, you read that right—a single stick! Considering you can buy a whole bunch of chives for less than $2 at the grocery store, this felt like highway robbery.
We waited and waited, and when the food finally started to trickle out of the kitchen, it was so slow that our appetites began to wane. We had to cancel a few dishes because the wait was just unbearable. It's a real shame because the food itself wasn’t terrible, but the poor service and ridiculous pricing completely overshadowed any potential enjoyment.
On a more positive note, the restaurant is aesthetically pleasing. If you’re looking for a place with nice décor and you’re not in any hurry to eat, then Hype BBQ might suit you. However, if you value your time, money, and overall dining experience, I’d recommend steering clear of this place. There are plenty of other restaurants in Scarborough that offer better service and value for your money. Hype BBQ, unfortunately, does not live up...
Read moreShort staffed. One waitress+one cashier/waitress. The senior waitress lady was extremely rude, eyeballed us multiple times when we ask for bowls and spoons for fried rice, for water, and when the dishes would arrive after 30mins wait. She yelled at us and cut us off EVERY SINGLE TIME. She shut me up by saying “I know I know”, when I was asking for bowls and spoons, but she didn’t even let me finish my sentence, so I had to go to the cashier to grab spoons myself. And she shouted at us and eyeballed us when we ask for ice water.
By 9 when there’s only 3 tables left, that senior waitress lady was literally sitting in the middle of the room grumpily eyeballing the remaining 3 tables with extreme hatred.
The food was very good and authentic, the chef was saving the day at the back, and the waitress was ruining all the efforts all by herself. The owner of the restaurant needs to come and see how their customers are treated if they want to keep the business running. That waitress lady is a disaster for...
Read moreThis is hands down one of the best authentic Hunan restaurants I’ve found in Toronto!
The owner does all the cooking — real wok-fried dishes, no pre-made stuff. You can tell each dish is cooked with care because they all have distinct flavors — it’s not that “every dish tastes the same” kind of place. Super rare to find that nowadays!
We tried the smoked beef with bamboo shoots and the stir-fried yellow beef — both were amazing. The meat and bamboo were sliced super thin and stir-fried just right. The yellow beef dish really stood out — not just spicy, but flavorful and aromatic, with a nice balance. Tasted just like home.
The place is small and cozy, probably best for 3–6 people max. Bigger groups might feel a bit cramped. But bonus: there’s actually parking available nearby!
I would like to give 10 stars.
Highly recommend if you’re craving real-deal Hunan food made with...
