My initial impression of BB’s wasn’t great. Coming inside the restaurant, the host hadn’t greeted us with hello or anything of the like, but rather with a “Do you have a reso?” To which I said no, he then, after deliberating for while pointed at a table and said we could sit there. Important to mention; the restaurant was empty and has continued to be empty for the entirety of our stay there, so the need for such heavy thinking on his part seemed to me at least a bit silly. We sat down and looked at the menu, we decided on the pork belly and the pancit noodles, from that point on the experience improved. Our initial host has become more attentive to our needs, constantly filling our glasses and taking our orders, though a friendly attitude towards us only developed towards the end of the meal, additionally, we were on rotation for another waiter who was very friendly and explained with a smile about every dish served, which was appreciated. The food came and I thought it was great, the pork belly was perfectly fried and had extremely crispy skin, the sour sauce and pickled veggies that it came with helped break up the heavy fattiness. Though my girlfriend and I still found the dish to be a bit heavy for us, it was very well made and tasty nonetheless. The highlight of the meal was the pancit noodles; they were chewy, the flavor was rich, and the dish filling and great value for the price. Overall, I enjoyed BB’s, some of the employees could serve to be a little friendlier, but overall I had a good time having some very tasty Filipino food. I definitely recommend trying! P.S I really like the design of...
Read moreWent for Dinner service as I live in the area and was curious to try a Michelin Bib Gourmand spot. Upon seating, we were greeted with a friendly server explaining the menu, which is very concise. We decided to order the Pancit Canton, the Fried Chicken, and the Tamarind Ribs, and a side of rice.
The Pancit Canton was vegetarian with a sweet flavor throughout the dish, however I think the dish was lacking some additional protein. This was good, but nothing special for the price and portions, as I think you can find a better version of this with more food for less. 2/5
The fried chicken was next to arrive, served with two drums and two thighs, and a sweet-sour tangy sauce with a bit of spice. The pieces were very small, and were also nothing special. The chicken tasted like run of the mill fried chicken, with a soft breading on the skin, but I had hoped that there would be a flavor that stands out other than the sauce which paired well. 2/5
The tamarind Ribs were the last to arrive, which looked like it might be redeeming. The tamarind glaze was a nice touch, and it had a good flavor. Some parts of the ribs were juicy but not too fatty, while some parts weren't as tender. I felt like it could benefit from more sauce on the side to offset the meatier parts. 2.5/5
Total for all three items split in two was $36. If you value a nice atmosphere and fancy looking filipino spots, then this would maybe be a 3/5. However, for food alone, portions and flavors left me and my friend...
Read moreMy wife and I came to this place partially out of curiosity to try a new filipino restaurant, and partially because they were featured on the Michelin Guide as a Bib Gourmand winner. I have been to hundreds of restaurants across the GTA including several other places that have a Bib Gourmand, and I have to admit that although the food was fairly good here, I felt like it was a fair bit of a let down.
Typically you'd expect something on the Michelin guide to be an exemplary experience in it's category, however I feel like both the taste and the value of the food were not only inferior to to it's competition on the guide, but actually below similar restaurants that don't have any Michelin recognition. Although the food isn't expensive per se, the portion sizes are quite small overall, and even with three dishes that we purchased, the two of us were just about three quarters of the way to being full (and the bill came out to about $70). On top of that, although the flavors were decent, we felt as though there are many other asian restaurants in the GTA with far superior taste despite their lack of recognition.
As such, we're not really sure who this restaurant is meant to appeal to: it's not an affordable value based meal but the actual food isn't even comparable to it's direct and indirect competitors. It's possible that we went on an off night, but we can't really recommend this place to anyone, especially when there are so many good food options available in the...
