The menu on their website was poorly presented, everything was just listed (when viewed on my cell phone) without obvious headers (ie. appetizers, sushi, maki, etc.). I called in my order and asked a few questions but the person I spoke to could barely speak english and sadly wasn't able to understand that I was asking a question after several repetitions. I finally gave up and ordered on my own reconnaissance. When I arrived to pick up my order I wasn't greeted, the server simply called out to ask me if I was picking up and walked over and handed me my order, then whipped out the debit/credit card machine. I had requested extra ginger and when I checked it was not included, just the usual amount, except the unusual amount was in a tiny, slightly larger than a thimble sized container, 3/4 full. I asked for additional ginger and the server added another measly container.... I was not impressed with their portion size whatsoever, so I asked for another, they looked up at me and said there was one already in there and continued to knot the bag. I mentioned that they were very small and repeated my request for more ginger with a clear intended to express my displeasure/dissatisfaction (in hopes for them to catch on and save face) but this request was ignored as she sealed the bag. Finally I inquired if it was possible to pay an additional fee in order to secure the appropriate amount of ginger, but they didn't seem to understand my request or that I was displeased, handed my order over then turned and walked away without replying. I sort of gaped for a moment, then turned and walked away. In summary, I wasn't greeted or thanked, I walked away feeling annoyed and skeptical about the ginger business, and as I was walking out the door I noticed a feeling of relief in my body, happy to be leaving the space... When I returned home slightly deflated and skeptical, though still very hungry, I semi-enjoyed a neutral/nothing special meal. It was not delicious, it was fine... Color me spoiled but I have grown used to delightfully tasty sushi, and this did not compare. Three further qualms to report, sadly, there were only 4 ketchup-sized packets of soy sauce (I ordered the BC tuna, the maki set b, and spring rolls), which meant 2 packets of soy per person, which is nowhere near enough, and less-than-a-dime-sized dollop of wasabi, which we split into two (picture a quarter of your pinkie fingernail) which didn't even come close to enough. We of course ran out of ginger halfway through the meal, which is my favourite thing about going for sushi, so ultimately the most disappointing of all. The "salad" included with the meal was truly un-edible, brown edged iceberg lettuce with a chunky dressing that didn't mix in... I was so disappointed with the experience and flabbergasted that I had paid $35 for this, I will certainly not be returning and will be choosing JP Sushi at Annette + Runnymede moving forward (their food is excellent!! couldn't recommend it enough, and the only reason I didn't go there tonight is because I was on foot and its located a 20 minute walk west of me, whereas this place is only a block away at Keele & Dundas). I feel moved to say that I usually only post positive reviews on Google to highlight excellence in service and to reward wonderful, hardworking, creative and Lovely local businesses, but after my experience tonight I could not not share. I hope that my experience was a one-off and that this restaurant doesn't conduct business this way on the regular; I also hope the owners take heed and consider putting someone well versed in customer service on their front line, who knows the menu inside and out and who is able to answer questions and make recommendations to their guests. Should their approach to customer care improve I'd be delighted to update my review, and I wish their business all the best and hope to hear about improved...
Read moreI’ve come to this sushi restaurant a few times, and I’m very disappointed in the lack of service provided as a returning costumer. I ordered a specific roll and spent about $35 on my meal, and asked if they could make one adjustment, as I am not able to eat shrimp. I basically asked if they could just replace it with some thing else, And I had asked for tuna, and was even willing to pay the extra price, but was still declined.
It’s disgusting how these businesses are running, willing to take your money, but not willing to make small accommodations for existing customers. To me, this is really disgusting and not to mention their portions are tiny.
There is a much better sushi place a few doors down that have really great energy, give larger proportions, and actually care about there costumers, and you can feel the difference. They have a service spirit, and not a spirit of greed.
Yes, sorry I just received your message below but I had no way of responding but yes, your servers are well aware of what happened as the lady actually went to the back after I asked and spoke to the person who was preparing the sushi at the back and it was a very clear NO, and yes, it was your restaurant as I live a couple blocks away and I’m absolutely positive that it was your restaurant.
It’s even more disappointing that you guys are throwing it under the rug and acting like it...
Read moreEven before this pandemic, D and Y sushi was our favourite sushi restaurant in the west end. Anticipating our 'weekly weekend take out' from this restaurant is something my family looks forward to as our busy week comes to a close. The restaurant is inviting, clean and the owners and staff are hospitable, kind, gracious and will go out of their way to accommodate any special needs the customer may have. Their food is consistently fresh and beautifully prepared and presented. Portion sizes (also including ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, chop sticks, etc.) are generous. Pricing is very reasonable for the quality of the dishes and the amount we are receiving. We love that we are able to purchase their small bottles of sake too. It makes our meal at home complete. Their phone is answered regularly and after placing our order, it is always read back to us for confirmation. Our orders are always complete with nothing missing. So we don't get disappointed, we often will plan ahead, place our order in the late afternoon and set a time for pick up because they get so busy. We strongly recommend D and Y sushi . It is an amazing west end gem. We can hardly wait until they open for 'in person"...
