Before people start heading to this restaurant, they need to know / learn what a "thalappakattu biryani" is supposed to taste like. If you're used to the regular biryani's served in the north Indian / Pakistani way, this place is not the one for you. Let me start the review. This restaurant is the perfect example of how we should not judge a restaurant based on it's decor, location, ambiance etc - we're not looking at Michelin star restaurants, we are looking for "good food". This restaurant gets 5 stars for the food. I ordered the mutton biryani combo as dine in. It comes with a bowl of boneless mutton biryani, a boiled egg, one piece spicy non-battered fried chicken, onion raita (yogurt based) & a curry gravy. The quantity is actually perfect if you're ordering a combo going in really hungry, if not, just go for the biryani. Now the taste - biryani was excellent with a higher spice level than the regular "corrupted" versions out there. The mutton was well done and melting in your mouth. While I did not ask the owner, I feel they have used clarified butter / ghee, something most Indian restaurants don't. The biryani reminded me of similar thalappakattu biryani's I was used to in India. The raita was very good, more onions / chillies and less yogurt (& thankfully, the yogurt wasn't sour). The curry gravy accompanied in a small cup adds little more spice. I wish I had more time to eat at a slower pace and enjoy it more, sadly, I had a conference call @ 1430 and i sort of rushed through the food, in spite of which, the taste lingers and the thought to return back for a nice lunch again is on my mind. Overall - this is spicy, authentic south Indian type biryani that people need to research about before heading out to eat. The restaurant though is not great for family, for which I suggest take out. While i was dining in, I saw at least 2 ordered being picked for take out through the online deliverers. Highly recommend for some authentic deep south Indian biryani. From the looks of it, it's run by a husband / wife duo and expect the food to be prepared while you're there - which is...
Read moreA Disappointing Dining Experience I recently visited Didigul Thalappakattu with high hopes, but unfortunately, my experience was overwhelmingly negative. While there was one redeeming factor, it certainly wasn't enough to salvage the evening. From the moment we arrived, the service was shockingly poor. We were seated promptly enough, but then it was an hour-long wait before our food finally arrived. To make matters worse, we weren't even offered water until we specifically asked for it, and even then, it took a considerable amount of time to arrive. This lack of basic attentiveness set the tone for the entire meal. When the food eventually did make its way to our table, it was a further letdown. The naan, a staple of Indian cuisine, was rock hard. It was so tough that it required a knife to break it apart – definitely not the soft, pillowy texture one expects. This made enjoying the accompanying dishes incredibly difficult and frustrating. Beyond the poor service and subpar food, the state of the washrooms was simply unacceptable. They were dirty and clearly hadn't been cleaned properly in quite some time. This lack of basic hygiene is a major concern for any dining establishment. The only positive aspect of the entire experience was the soup. It was flavorful and well-prepared, a small bright spot in an otherwise dismal meal. However, a single good dish does not excuse the multitude of problems I encountered. In addition to that, the place was not even busy and they were not keen to take care of customers. Overall, my visit to Didigul Thalappakattu was extremely disappointing. The combination of terrible service, an excessive wait time, inedible naan, and unclean washrooms made for a truly unpleasant dining experience. While the soup was tasty, it's simply not enough to recommend this restaurant. I would strongly advise potential diners to consider...
Read moreVery little food, secondly the food prices were so high, lots of places which offer a lamb biryani for 11 to 13 bucks, but this place sells lamb biryani for 17.99 for a very small portion size, you should see in other North Indian/ Hyderabadi biryani stores in Scarborough, so cheap and lots of food, thirdly we called and placed order, in the menu the price was cheap it said 15 for lamb biryani, so we ordered 2 lamb biryani and 1 chicken biryani with 1 chicken 65.. all the food prices were priced high in the receipt though,So wen we called into ask why there was a price mismatch , the lady replied ‘Oh, the prices are different now. We changed the prices and the cost in the website are not correct’ How bad of a customer service is this? Wow! These people steal our money and at the end disappoint us, if it was for one item I understand, but all the 4 items price mismatch - & very less portion sizes, only like 40 percent meat in the biryani.. so guys u decide! This place is by far the most overrated places in Scarborough, guys please go and learn from other Srilankan restaurants like how generous they are in when it comes to food(btw I’m from Chennai, so no biased opinions or something) .. to everyone who is reading the reviews when you call this place to order, check with the prices if it’s same as the menu. Just two small boxes of gravy for three biryanis as well! Worst place! Bye bye Dindigul.. thanks for being so stingy and...
