We came across this restaurant while driving on Lakeshore and decided to grab some takeout yesterday, May 9th. We got 2 pieces of haddock with chips for 27.99 and a side of coleslaw ~$4.00. It was odd though that the $27.99 deal included the coleslaw clearly written on their menu but I was told purchase the coleslaw separately because I was ordering takeout - strange.

Pros/Cons: Overall, the portion of food is great - big fillets and lots of chips. The batter on the haddock looked beautifully crisp and light, however, it was very greasy once eaten, unfortunately.

Customer Service: Restaurant was empty with just one dine-in customer. The lady/server at the front did not bother to acknowledge me once I entered the restaurant and turned around with her back towards me. So naturally, I said hello and asked how she was :) Unfortunately, I did not get the clarity I was looking for when asking questions about the menu and just ended up getting the haddock.

I will assume the server was having a not-so-good morning, however, in this industry, where there is massive competition, a poor experience, will likely deviate a customer to walk in through the door again. A welcome and/or a nice hello goes a long way - do that with every person that walks through your doors; they choose to give you...

I come consistently for the $7 Sunday and Monday haddock special and lately we have been receiving a less than enjoyable experience. The special comes with a large strip of fresh fried haddock, fries and coleslaw. I have to ask for more coleslaw than fries because more than half the plate is a mountain of fries which are not that crispy and not seasoned. The servers are not great as we have been told how to order food so we don't waste so many fries. Servers at Halibut House make us feel like we inconvenience them with our presence. As stated by the person I went with, "The servers do not listen to your order then get frustrated when you cannot finish what you specifically didn't ask for. We have been told to order like the other women and get a half portion. These kinds of comments make us feel very uncomfortable and not wanting to return. The customer is not always right at this establishment." As for the coleslaw, it is so dry I cannot tell if it is a cream based or a vinegar based coleslaw.

Lastly, our first experience here we arrived at the restaurant 30 minutes before it was scheduled to close and when we arrived the restaurant decided to close early. This caused us to go to another restaurant for...

I visited on 01 December 2023 for take out and ordered 2x haddock dinners that came to $36.05. When I got home, Bloor West and The Westmall area, my mom opened the delivery bag and noticed there was no coleslaw and the boxes seemed small. She was right, the fries and fish were both in the same box. The amount of fries is less and soggy and there is no coleslaw.

The restaurant was contacted and was told that coleslaw is only for clients that dine-in.

Yet they charge you the same price as dine-in and give you less. The fish and fries should be in separate containers and give you coleslaw if being charged the same price.

I have noticed that in Halibut Houses that I have dined-in and done take-out, it is always the same issue. Take-out should cost less due to the small portion and no coleslaw. If I were to put this portion on their plate, I guarantee you that the size would be different from the dine-in portion.

For $36.05, I could have bought a large size pizza or 2x breakfast at A&W or gone to any other restaurant and still have had extra money to buy more food the next day.

For this reason, DO NOT DO TAKE OUT, your being robbed from...

Finding a good spot for brunch—something that isn’t quite breakfast but not quite dinner—can sometimes be a challenge. This was our first visit here, and it did not disappoint. The fish and chips were fresh, the salad was excellent, and the service was top-notch. But what stood out to me most had little to do with the food. Our server, Kelsey (hope I got her name right), knew the place inside and out and had a way of connecting with people that felt truly genuine. There was an older gentleman with impaired speech cracking jokes with her, and while we couldn’t quite make out what he was saying, she effortlessly joined in his self-talk, laughing along. Their interaction was heartwarming, and I later learned that he’s a regular, well-known for his friendly nature. This is the kind of thing I love to see in the world—good food and people being kind to one another, simply because they can.
