I never like to write negative reviews but I am so disappointed with the way the quality of service and food at off the hook has changed since the first time I walked in there three years ago. Three years ago I was diagnosed with celiac and giving up fish and chips every friday sucked. Then my husband and I came across this place. We checked it out and it was everything I could have imagined. They had gluten free beer, French fries, and halibut all I could ask for and man was it good. And the service was great so friendly and very knowledgeable.
We continued to visit as often as we could it was a 40 min drive from our place but worth it. We brought friends here and they loved it.
Unfortunately this last year the quality and portion sizes have changed dramatically. I remember not being able to finish my food to one time receiving ten fries and a tiny piece of fish. And this is not cheap.
We recently brought some friends there and again it wasn’t great. The fries were ok. The fish wasn’t crispy and flaky. However the service was good that night.
Just this past Saturday my family and I made the 40 minute drive out there and the place smelt like someone was smoking in the bathroom it was tough to get past the stink. The service was awful. It felt like we we’re inconveniencing them. I had ordered frings and halibut gluten free and I received just onion rings. I thought about complainOmg but didn’t knowing the onion rings are usually pretty good. The only thing I could taste was batter on the fish and the onion rings. It was like a plain donut with no flavour and u had to find the onion inside. My fish was no better it was completely dried out and again the batter was so thick and doughy. I sat there with half the food on my plate and not once was I asked how my meal was. Was everything ok? My kids meals came and to me the cod looked under done. It was still clear looking. My husband said it was flaking luckily no one was sick. However half of their meals were left on plate as inside did not look appetizing. To make a long story end here eventually the guy came back and started to clear plates still not asking how it was and offered to box my food! Well when I am paying premium price I guess I better take it home.
I almost brought my brother there that night as he has gluten issues as well and I thought he would be pumped. I am grateful he did not join us as I don’t think we will be going back. Seems like there is no interest in the...
Read moreWe passed this place and later decided we felt like fish and chips. Being the only place open on a Sunday, we backtracked to try this spot.
The place is small and cute, rustic and homey. The 'window' (where you collect your food) was closest to the door so we stood there a bit, unsure who we gave our order to. The cook directed us to a lady sat down at a low counter (my partner says she was on her phone). She was pleasant but not overly friendly or helpful (we'd never been before), and took our orders.
The menu was good and varied, some small plates and burgers. For fish and chips, they have a rotating fish offering (depending on what's available, and sold at 'market price'), choice of batter (regular, some spiced ones, and gluten free), side (fries, 'frings', onion rings, etc), and sauce (tartar, mayo blends..) and coleslaw. We opted for cod and haddock (monk fish was also offered that day), and regular fries. It was prepared fairly quickly: there were plastic utensils and ketchup to take, but no knives or vinegar (odd).
As a coastal Brit, I found the fries to be GREAT and there was a decent amount. The fish batter tastes good and the size was huge, but there was very very little actual fish (I'd seriously guess about 1:4-1:3 fish:batter ratio). It was also quite over fired and super crisp-- perhaps this is a North American thing (I know bacon is often cooked to cremation point here too haha), but we found it too filling and hard to eat (especially with a plastic fork). Pigeons loved it though!
The cost was honestly the worst part. If the actual fish portion was bigger (ie. not all batter), it would've been a good deal. But it almost worked out to $15/person. Crazy for 4oz of fish, and not even a pricey neighbourhood..
I don't think...
Read moreWas not sure about ordering a burger at a place named "Off The Hook Fishbar" But for some reason I had burgers on my mind before stepping into that restaurant.
I ordered the Royal Burger and I have to say it was OFF THE HOOK.
I for one appreciate a good burger and as they seem to be more popular now with all the dedicated burger joints opening up I still find most of these burger just being a burger.
There are very few times when a burger has been so tasty and memorable even when you expect it from a place that specializes in burgers.
The Royal burger from Off The Hook was absolutely amazing. It was like a symphony in my mouth with every bite. It was one of those things where you take smaller bites at the end just to make it last longer.
I would make it one of the top burgers I have ever had. I was in the mood for a burger and that is when looking at the menu I kept gravitating to the Royal burger. I was just expecting a typical good burger but this was great and would recommend to everyone. The fresh thick cust fries and onion rings (frings) I got with them were very good.
The wife got the Halibut fish and chips with gluten free batter and is great to. My wife was so happy to learn that they have a gluten free option for fish and chips which is one of her favorite indulgence dishes.
The restaurant feel inside is cool with some cool art and old records on the walls.
Service was spot on from start to finish.
If your in the area I would highly recommend Off The Hook Fishbar.
Cheers and thanks OTHF for the...
