The restaurant is more like the size of a food truck located within a street with similar sized mini restaurants. There are also picnic benches available to sit on with umbrellas on top.
They mainly sell Japanese rice balls or Omusubi and Japanese comfort food, as well as Dango and drinks.
I ordered the Oyakodon (chicken and egg donburi, $13.27) and a Mitarashi Dango (sticky and chewy rice balls with a sweet soy sauce sauce on top, $3.00).
The Oyakodon was delicious. The chicken was smooth and easy to eat. The egg was soft and fluffy. There's this sweet and savory sauce throughout the entirety of the dish. The pickled radish and ginger cleansed the palate. The seaweed was an added flavour.
The Mitarashi Dango was sweet, chewy and sticky. On one stick came with 4 Dango balls. It also came in a green leaf kind of bowl thing. It's only my second time eating a Mitarashi Dango, and it does taste better than the store bought one.
The service was good and fast, considering that I ordered a hot food (10 min wait time). Service was also polite. The lady answered my questions well regarding the size of the Oyakodon bowl.
It seems like there are seasonal dishes and snacks that come out during the specific seasons. I guess I'll be coming back here every so often to try the seasonal stuff.
Overall, I was pleased with what I got. I wanted to try the Sesame Dango too, but that's for my next visit. I wanted to try their Omusubi, but they were more expensive than expected, so I didn't get any. I read that they have Oden during the colder months, so I'm tempted to return...
Read moreWe were suppose to be checking out a cafe in the west end, but we end up strolling along Dundas West, and came across Omusubi Bar Suzume. It is a small local food stall on the street along with 10+ other food stalls. I was very excited to try the Japanese rice balls.
The lady owner, Rie, was very nice and friendly. Everything was fresh and made to order. I read online about her journey of opening this pop-up food stall; definitely give this lady some support if you are ever in the west end of Toronto
We ordered 3 rice balls to try, we had the salmon wasabi, ume shiso (it is sour/salty like traditional ones, FYI) and the omusubi of the month: corn miso butter! The ingredients are simple, tasty and filling. I like that the rice is seasoned. Some places don't season their rice, and it drives me insane! The packaging is very unique, you have to follow the steps to open it... don't screw it up LOL! Basically the seaweed is separated from the rice ball, you just need to assemble it by following the instructions lol.
We also ordered the chicken and egg don, which was also very tasty. The barley drink was a nice change as opposed to matcha or hojicha. The aftertaste reminds me of coffee actually, but less...
Read moreMy new favourite place in Toronto!!! Yesterday I was walking home and came across Omusubi and my world has been changed. What this quaint little restaurant lacks in size, makes up for in atmosphere, quality, price and deliciousness!
I ended up ordering the Salmon and Japanese Sweet Potato rice ball, and let me tell you, they were INCREDIBLE. I recently visited Japan, and these rice balls rivaled and beat almost anything I ate while there. They were the size of a big mac and the fillings were fresh and tasty - and they came to $8!
While waiting to order, I just sat back and watched the chef prepare the Miso Eggplant Don, and my mouth was watering. Typically these smaller container restaurants are a single deep fryer, but here it was a proper stove, with a chef who actually has care and love for what she was creating. For $13, you can get yourself a homemade cozy meal.
Lastly, the atmosphere of the restaurant was perfect. It felt like looking into a window of someone's house. Pots and pans hanging from the walls, cool, smooth jazz playing and suttle Japanese decoration that complete the space.
I cannot recommend Omusubi enough, and I look forward to supporting this business for hopefully years to come!...
