When my parents moved to the GTA from Vietnam in the 1980s, every weekend, they would buy enough banh mi in Toronto to last them the work week in Mississauga (because, back then, places offering Vietnamese food were few and far between) so I grew up being very familiar with the banh mi staples around Spadina and have seen great banh mi shops establish themselves outside of Toronto in the last few decades.

Still, Little Banh Mi Shop on Dundas is one of the best banh mi’s I’ve ever had! Their cold cut (thập cẩm) and beef banh mi’s are incredibly flavourful with abundant fillings - including good pickled veggies that are necessary to a great banh mi. Their addition of the jalapeños for some spice reminds me of the pickled jalapeños ever present in my mom’s fridge growing up. The buns are a perfect balance of soft on the inside and crunchy on the exterior - perfect to absorb the classic pâté spread and the sauce from the freshly grilled beef that’s been marinated overnight.

Their selection of banh mi’s are offered at $9-$12 and they’re well worth the price! I know people will be quick to compare prices to other banh mi shops around the city, but, first, remind yourself that high quality ingredients (and service!) are going to rightfully cost a little more and, second, question whether your expectations of a “cheap” price is from a fair assessment of a meal’s quality/components or whether this expectation of a race-to-the-bottom banh mi price is from a misguided perception of the hierarchy of food and value.

I got the tofu banh mi, grilled pork banh mi, four fried spring rolls, and fresh chicken rice rolls. 1.Banh Mi - the tofu was so flavourful and there were even juicy pieces of mushroom! The grilled pork banh mi had a wonderful traditional vietnamese sweet and slightly salty flavour. 5/5 would recommend the banh mi Fried Spring Rolls - THIS IS A MUST BUY! Packed full of meat and filling for a reasonable price as well. As good as my mom's spring rolls! 5/5 Fresh Chicken Rice Rolls - the vegetables were so fresh, the presentation was beautiful and the fact they used thin net vermicelli noodles is SUPER authentic! The dipping sauce was also so delicious. 5/5
