Toronto's Best-Kept Secret: Remezzo Italian Bistro

visited : Friday March 09, 2018 My wife and were in the mood for Italian, and Remezzo happened to be close by when I picked her up from work. The service was very good so I left an ample tip to our server, which I don't usually do at Chinese restos. Now, I would like to offer a warning for those that manage gout to be careful when dining at this resto. There are potentially many items on the menu that may trigger a gout flare up. Lots of dishes contain spinach and beef. There were some chicken options as well, but not paired with pasta. We were so hungry on our arrival, I had completely forgotten to take pictures of our appetizers. We did order veggie spring rolls with came with plum sauce + wasabi mixed dipping sauce along with escargot, the appetizers alone almost ran us $20 CAD. Oh they did provide complimentary bread basket which was served warm. As for our main dishes, my wife ordered the Cannelloni and I had the Spaghetti Bolognese. We shared the 2 dishes. Both dishes were tasty, except the Cannelloni was a bit too salty for our palates, along with containing spinach. I do wish there was more anti-gout friendly options. I didn't finish all the sauce that came with my Spaghetti Bolognese due to the meat sauce being beef based and there was a lot of ground beef left on the plate. Our main dishes also came close to another $20 CAD. Total bill hit us for $47 roughly. Since there were so many dishes that could potentially trigger gout..follow up repeat visits may restrict us only to the appetizer portion of the menu, since that menu had the items that would likely not trigger a gout flare-up within the next few hours.

My family and friends have been patronizing Remezzo for decades. Of the umpteen times we have dined in, there have only been a couple of times where something seemed off but it was always corrected immediately once alerted to server/mgmt. Staff is consistently very kind and efficient. Many with long tenure and overall turnover seems quite low. So must be a testament to how they are managed/treated well 😊 The caesar salad and croutons are incredible. Easily in top 3 I’ve ever had. Bruschetta with chèvre and calamari fritti are also favourites. I usually ask for a tzatziki in addition to the seafood sauce that comes with. My family and friends are big fans of the crab cakes, veal piccata and chicken parmesan. Bolognese meat sauce is delicious and again probably in top 3 I’ve ever tasted. Sometimes I’ll ask for it rose, or change up the pasta shape to angel hair and it’s never an issue or upcharge. Definitely a Scarborough/East Toronto gem and a good spot for either a date night or family gathering of all ages. There are often large groups celebrating retirement, birthday, holiday parties etc and kudos to the restaurant for keeping them nicely secluded so the noise doesn’t carry. Out of the establishments control, and likely more a property issue…there is only one accessible parking spot. Which is unfortunate and surprising considering the demographic of diners. True 5 star! Without bias, just 100% experience.

very nasty place! let me start by saying i ordered from takeout and i have come by this place very often. recently the management or who i assume are the owners have become horrible people to buy from. the bigger guy of the 2 i have seen many times eating from customers plates once the food is in the window for the servers to take out!! do not eat here, chances are the owner has eaten from your plate before it reaches to you. he is also always drunk his breath smells like alcohol even 1 in the afternoon. he is always yelling and swearing at the workers and saying foul things like "go f yourselves you're all f'd up" he is racist i have heard him many times make fun of different background people mocking them when they order. i used to eat in the restaurant and i would see him throwing things at customers when they are not looking and then laughing about it as though it is funny. this place has really gone down hill in the past years. very unsanitary conditions, flies everywhere, wallpaper peeling and hasn't been cleaned in years. also the old lady that works there is always pushing for tips and looking down on you when you don't give her a tip. she is a nasty old greedy lady too. restaurants used to be about the quality and service now it's just about the money. the other owner is always working seems to have better temperament between the two. i don't like to eat inside the restaurant anymore because i have seen the bigger one eating from soup bowls and pasta before the server takes the food to the customer inside. also i have seen the same guy smoking cigarette in the kitchen at the back. don't you see that people can see you? disgusting! you are smoking cigarette in the kitchen where the food is made. buyer beware! much better restaurants to eat at. they do not care that customers can hear or see what...

Went to dinner here with my husband and son. I was hoping to make this restaurant our local go-to since we live in the area. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a very pleasant experience, mainly because of the service and one of our meals was disappointing. I didn’t get the name of the young waitress, but she wasn’t very good at her job. She missed a couple things we asked for right from the get-go (nothing big, like a lemon wedge and some extra napkins), but we didn’t make a big deal about it. The wait was also pretty long after being seated to be seen by the waitress, then to get the appetizers and then the main meals. Again, we didn’t make a fuss. Where it became annoying is when we got the $47 12 oz steak striploin meal and it was served in a plate meant for pasta (it dips in) so you can’t cut the steak straight, and it was served on top of cold, undercooked fries. For that amount of money, you expect more than what was served. The steak also looked unappealing. When we mentioned to the waitress that the fries were cold and undercooked and would like a different side instead, she just stared at us and said sorry in a way that looked like she was smirking at us. Also, not sure if this is common practice at this restaurant, but when I got my linguine di mare, they didn’t offer any pepper or Parmesan (none at the table). Again, not normally a big deal, but it just felt like the whole dining experience consisted of constantly asking for things that many servers typically offer/provide. There were other instances that occurred, but I don’t want to write a novel. It was a shame, because we were really hoping to enjoy dining there. If we didn’t enjoy the escargot, bruschetta, and linguine di mare, I would have given 0 (if...

The food was great. We had no complains about the food as it tasted great and is made to order.

We did have a problem with the service. Our server ( Not sure of her name but it was a lady who was much older than the rest of the staff) didn't act very professional with us.

After she came to us to ask us for our order, we had asked for 5 minutes. In that time, 15 minutes has passed and she was no where to be seen. While the restaurant was pretty lively, She was given a smaller section compared to her coworkers (around 4 tables).

After around 20 minutes we finally found her. She had asked us to wait to take a prior tables order which is understandable. What I do not understand is why she also took the order of 2 newer tables before coming to our table last. She said she had sold the last Cod fish special to one of the newer tables that just came in after us which we were disappointed about but didn't upset us to badly.

We waited another 20 minutes for her to tell us she had served our dishes to another table. We ended up waiting over 40 minutes after ordering. I could understand this is the newer tables did not get their food first. It wasn't like our meals took longer because we had nearly the exact same dishes as those served out the other tables around us. Why did a table that got seated 30 minutes ago get their food before my table who was waited just under an hour?

We always tip, leaving even 15% for mediocre service, but my sister had caught her trying to put in the tip herself. We ended up convincing the bill footer to pay cash so she couldn't try to extort us. We still left 15% if you must know.

I want to give this restaurant another try, but perhaps with...
