Looking for an affordable no frills Cantonese restaurant? Look no further! This restaurant is nestled inside a busy plaza on the southwest corner of Birchmount Rd and Sheppard Ave E. They are open 7 days a week 3pm - 1am. Great hours if you want a late night bite!
We got here around 7pm and restaurant was already full with some diners about to leave. We were seated in about 5 minutes.
There are specials posted on the wallin Chinese and there are English menus as well. We chose from the booklet menu which says special dishes for neighbours. These dishes at $12.99 each are slightly smaller however they are great value. The pricing used to be $9.99 last time we went in 2021.
We ordered the following:
Fish w/bean curd in hot pot Sweet and sour pork Beef and mushroom with ginger and green onions
There's a complimentary house soup served to get your pallet ready for the Cantonese feast. The soup has pork bone and was not overly salty just right.
The hot pot was served piping hot. There were strips bean curd "foo chok", fried tofu, bok choy and breaded grouper fish. You can taste the love the chefs put into each dish. Only critique would be the lack of fish in the hot pot. Otherwise we enjoyed this dish and will order something similar next time.
The sweet sour pork had nice large breaded pieces of pork with bell peppers, white onions and pineapple. The sweet and sour sauce was tangy and savoury at the same time. Great balance of acidity and sweetness due to the pineapples. This is a great dish for kids who want something colourful to look at.
Lastly, the beef and mushrooms. What can I say, there's another popular restaurant that makes this dish on a sizzling plate but charges $20.99. Here it's served on a regular plate but the portions were generous. Beef flank steak were tender and melt in your mouth. Mushrooms were chopped in larger bite size pieces and the sauce was just right.
Only hit or miss here is the service. They are kind of understaffed but the servers are working hard there to bring out the orders clean the tables etc. If you're in the area and looking for some good Cantonese comfort food not from the big Congee franchises, give this place a try you won't be disappointed. I've been here...
Read moreOrdered beef chow fun, spicy hot and sour soup, corn and crab soup and deep fried pork intestines. The waiter who took the order did not get it correctly. The crab and corn soup came at first with just the crab without the corn. Since this is my little daughter’s order, I asked the waiter where is the corn? So the waiter took it back and returned with just corn now… so where’s the crab? The waiter responded to me with annoyed face and said that either corn or crab only, they don’t go together! But the menu said CORN and CRAB SOUP. I did not argue for respect. My daughter was really unhappy eating her soup that she couldn’t finished it even I ordered small size only. My soup which was the spicy hot and sour was really good and the fried intestine was what I expected. The noodles though was not the one we wanted. This was more like fried noodles with no beef or anything. The waiter did not come back to our table and another waiter came who was so nice to us and friendly. He always smiles unlike the first one who was so grumpy and looks unapproachable. Got the chance to come to this place for second time around for dinner. Because we have someone who can speak Chinese we were treated so well and got all orders correctly. All were happy with the orders and the service we received. I just wish that the waiter who attended to us during my first dined in here would be fair and try to understand what customers really want and try not to make face or argue with customers and know the menu written because I was just reading and pointing it what exactly my...
Read moreFood was overall pretty good. Prices are fair for majority of the dishes. Staff were friendly and attentive. Came for dinner and soup of the day was provided at the start and Chinese mung bean dessert was provided at the end.
Came on a Friday night and it was not too busy - did not have to wait in line.
Things I ordered:
Yang chow fried rice: 4/5 - very umami and had “wok hey”. A bit on the pricier side for fried rice
Clams: 5/5 - very fresh and the clams were very large and had lots of meat.
Steamed chicken: 4/5 - meat was tender and as good as any other restaurant for this classic dish
Seafood birds nest: 3/5 - while it was fresh and tasty, there was not a lot of seafood. Barely 4 pieces of shrimps, 2 scallops, and 3 squid. Also expected the nest part to be fried taro but it was some kind of fried flour mixture instead? It did not hold up well against the sauce and became really soggy at the end.
Beef with mushroom and onion: 1/5 - Did not enjoy this one at all. Portion was quite small, beef was quite chewy and the beef had a bizarre flavour to it, almost as if the beef was not fresh a sitting out too long. It did not really have a sauce so the beef and mushroom didn’t have much flavour. Mushrooms were also cut way too large. Too much yellow onions added to bulk up the dish.
I would recommend the beef with yu choy/Chinese broccoli instead. I saw many other tables ordered it and it looked much...
