This place is an absolute delight. I stumbled upon their King West location in 2014 and I've been going to both locations (King West and Distillery) since then. They serve two flavours of hot chocolate (classic or spicy Mayan). You can either have them as a shot or dilute them with water or milk. I've tried the shot and although the first sip was great, it was a bit too intense for my liking. I like my hot chocolate with half milk, half water. They offer a great selection of gelatos in the summer and fall. My favourites are Sicilian pistachio, roasted almond and roasted hazelnut. The Sicilian pistachio is almost always sold out (for scoops) but you can always buy a tub. Try the blueberry basil sorbet if you're looking for a fresh flavour. Their coconut sorbet is so creamy and makes for a dairy free alternative to gelato. In terms of chocolate, my wife and I's favourite is the Old School Milk chocolate bar which is a milk chocolate bar made in the old fashioned way. It has a great texture and flavour. Their other chocolate bars are like a whirlwind taste tour of the world. They even have a 100% chocolate bar if you're feeling adventurous. They also have great gift baskets which you can customize.

I recently visited Soma Chocolate Maker, which is conveniently located inside the District Distillery. I tried their gelato, opting for the strawberry and mango flavors. According to the staff, their best sellers are the dark chocolate and strawberry flavors, so I had high expectations. I was not disappointed—the gelato was incredibly flavorful and rich. The price is quite reasonable given the generous portions and high quality of the gelato. I also picked up some dark chocolate bark with cacao nibs to bring home. It turned out to be a delightful treat, and everyone at home loved it. The combination of the smooth dark chocolate and crunchy cacao nibs was a hit. The price of the chocolate at Soma was reasonable, but I wish I had opted for the version without the box. The box added a bit to the cost, and I realized that the chocolate itself was just as enjoyable without it. Next time, I’ll go for the simpler option to save a bit and still enjoy the same great quality.

Overall great experience at Soma. Their shop layout is stunning, I loved the see through windows and see the chocolatiers doing their work. Their chocolate and other confections is pretty good, I bought different products just to try and taste as many items possible. They are all great, from the bonbons to their chocolate bars, the swirled marshmallow and even bought some hot chocolate, it was all delicious. I’m Mexican and I’m also a baker so it was a bit difficult to appreciate the Mayan hot chocolate (I chose water based) as the authentic chocolate that I know very well. However, I did appreciate the nice bitter flavor in it, which is a huge change from North American hot chocolate. I will also say, that the place feels a bit too big and almost too empty so it ends up feeling like an impersonal shop experience. The staff could be a bit warmer. With that said, I can’t wait to go again and try more items!

So this happened back in July when I was visiting TO. Went in with a friend because she was excited about good chocolate. We had just had lunch so we decided on gelato instead. We both sampled and I decided on raspberry and chocolate. The spoons are plastic and I told the person helping me I didn't need another spoon with my gelato. I saw the plastic bowls they came in and asked if I could just get it in a paper cup. She outright said no, even though there were some paper cups for coffee. I just told her I was trying to cut down on plastic waste and then specifically asked for a paper cup by pointing at it. Her response was "well our plastic is biodegradable." I'm a chemistry teacher. Barely any plastic is biodegradable unless it's made out of Cassava. I should have refused the gelato at this point, but I was caught off guard and stammered through the rest of the transaction. My friend watched the whole thing and she is also a teacher and commented on how cold and disrespectful the employee was. The two gentlemen behind us also watched and I felt angry at how the situation was dealt with. She scooped the gelato and then put another plastic spoon into the bowl. Handed the gelato to me, but before she gave it to me she retracted her reach and said "oh right, you don't want another plastic spoon" and TOOK THE NEW SPOON AND THREW IT AWAY. My friend could have used it. I could have taken it and recycled it properly or reused it. The experience made me so upset I couldn't even taste the gelato, and in hindsight I should have not even bought it after she refused to let me use a paper cup. I also looked up the plastic bowls and without proper recycling, they aren't anywhere even close to being biodegradable. In the distillery district, I would expect that businesses might do their due diligence to ensure that plastic waste is kept to a minimum, or at least understand when a customer expresses concern about their usage. I have had bad experiences at many places but I usually chalk it up to an off day and don't let it reflect on the business badly, but in this case, it literally soured my whole experience, dulled my taste buds, and embarrassed me for still accepting the gelato. I gave the girl helping me soooo many chances to change my experience and I was met with a hard no on all accounts. Sorry this is long. I needed to get this...

SOMA chocolatemaker, located in the Distillery District of Toronto, is a chocolate lover's paradise. The store has a very cozy and welcoming ambiance with its warm lighting, rustic décor, and a range of delicious chocolate treats on display. As soon as you walk in, you are immediately hit with the delicious smell of chocolate.

The store offers an impressive selection of handcrafted chocolates, including truffles, bars, and seasonal treats. The chocolates are made from high-quality, ethically sourced cocoa beans and come in a variety of unique flavors. Some of the standout flavors include dark chocolate with wild blueberries, milk chocolate with maple syrup, and dark chocolate with chili.

In addition to the chocolates, SOMA chocolatemaker also serves hot chocolate, coffee, and other sweet treats like macarons and brownies. Their hot chocolate is especially noteworthy, as it's made from melted chocolate rather than cocoa powder, giving it a rich and decadent flavor.

The staff at SOMA chocolatemaker are very friendly and knowledgeable about their products. They are happy to offer recommendations and answer any questions you may have about the chocolates or the chocolate-making process. The store also offers chocolate-making classes and workshops, which could be a great experience for those interested in learning more about the art of chocolate-making.

Overall, SOMA chocolatemaker is a must-visit destination for chocolate lovers in Toronto. The high-quality chocolates, cozy ambiance, and friendly staff make it a fantastic place to indulge in some delicious treats or find a unique gift for...

I have been an avid fan of Soma since 2005, fancying on their fantastic chocolates for a very long time. I have recommended them to many, MANY, friends, whom, all of which have loved their quality and chocolates for years. This is why it saddens me to write this review. Over the years, i have enjoyed their products, everything from their limited chocolates, to their hot chocolate, and this is what brought me here. As I understand, the prices of cacao have been steadily going up. This has lead, (to my belief) to Soma having to increase their prices, and shrink their package sizes. What was once a large sampling of chocolate, has now become a pint of what it used to be. And in that case, the same rings true for their hot chocolate. What was once a delicious, rich and creamy serving, has now become a heated milk and hint of something chocolate. For years, I have chosen the mayan spicy hot chocolate with milk. And after MULTIPLE, servings, complaining about the fact it has changed, it has now become a spicy hot milk drink. All of the flavorful chocolate has all but dissapeared, and you are left with a chili milk. This is quite upsetting, knowing that they now choose profits over quality. My new hunt for a RESPECATBLE chocolatier has to begin again, something that I know will not be easy. Thanks for the years of quality products Soma, but now, you have just become a bargain level hot chocolate looking to line your pockets with cash instead of putting out the quality product...
