So this happened back in July when I was visiting TO. Went in with a friend because she was excited about good chocolate. We had just had lunch so we decided on gelato instead. We both sampled and I decided on raspberry and chocolate. The spoons are plastic and I told the person helping me I didn't need another spoon with my gelato. I saw the plastic bowls they came in and asked if I could just get it in a paper cup. She outright said no, even though there were some paper cups for coffee. I just told her I was trying to cut down on plastic waste and then specifically asked for a paper cup by pointing at it. Her response was "well our plastic is biodegradable." I'm a chemistry teacher. Barely any plastic is biodegradable unless it's made out of Cassava. I should have refused the gelato at this point, but I was caught off guard and stammered through the rest of the transaction. My friend watched the whole thing and she is also a teacher and commented on how cold and disrespectful the employee was. The two gentlemen behind us also watched and I felt angry at how the situation was dealt with. She scooped the gelato and then put another plastic spoon into the bowl. Handed the gelato to me, but before she gave it to me she retracted her reach and said "oh right, you don't want another plastic spoon" and TOOK THE NEW SPOON AND THREW IT AWAY. My friend could have used it. I could have taken it and recycled it properly or reused it. The experience made me so upset I couldn't even taste the gelato, and in hindsight I should have not even bought it after she refused to let me use a paper cup. I also looked up the plastic bowls and without proper recycling, they aren't anywhere even close to being biodegradable. In the distillery district, I would expect that businesses might do their due diligence to ensure that plastic waste is kept to a minimum, or at least understand when a customer expresses concern about their usage. I have had bad experiences at many places but I usually chalk it up to an off day and don't let it reflect on the business badly, but in this case, it literally soured my whole experience, dulled my taste buds, and embarrassed me for still accepting the gelato. I gave the girl helping me soooo many chances to change my experience and I was met with a hard no on all accounts. Sorry this is long. I needed to get this...

Read moreI have been an avid fan of Soma since 2005, fancying on their fantastic chocolates for a very long time. I have recommended them to many, MANY, friends, whom, all of which have loved their quality and chocolates for years. This is why it saddens me to write this review. Over the years, i have enjoyed their products, everything from their limited chocolates, to their hot chocolate, and this is what brought me here. As I understand, the prices of cacao have been steadily going up. This has lead, (to my belief) to Soma having to increase their prices, and shrink their package sizes. What was once a large sampling of chocolate, has now become a pint of what it used to be. And in that case, the same rings true for their hot chocolate. What was once a delicious, rich and creamy serving, has now become a heated milk and hint of something chocolate. For years, I have chosen the mayan spicy hot chocolate with milk. And after MULTIPLE, servings, complaining about the fact it has changed, it has now become a spicy hot milk drink. All of the flavorful chocolate has all but dissapeared, and you are left with a chili milk. This is quite upsetting, knowing that they now choose profits over quality. My new hunt for a RESPECATBLE chocolatier has to begin again, something that I know will not be easy. Thanks for the years of quality products Soma, but now, you have just become a bargain level hot chocolate looking to line your pockets with cash instead of putting out the quality product...
