Good food, fresh ingredients, and immaculate vibes - South Indian Dosa Mahal's (1285 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M6H 1N7) motto is to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. A warm restaurant in heart of Bloor, Dosa Mahal's thalis seek to bring the best of South India on a platter. Hoping to try a few wholesome dishes, I ordered the biryani thali and the roti thali. Both the thalis came with 5 assorted curries (tomato eggplant curry, mash potato masala curry, lentil curry, vegetable curry, and sambhar), raita, and papadum. Served with a biryani or a soft piece of flatbread, both these thalis had generous portions of curries and side dishes. The biryani was utterly fragrant and lflavorful while the roti was utterly fluffy - both of them paired well with the perfectly spiced curries. The dishes were only made better with the tangy pickles and refreshing raita - the perfect meal to remind me of home! Should you find yourself missing a wholesome meal from home, South Indian Dosa Mahal is the place to be. With several varieties of thalis and dosas, you are sure to fulfil your Indian food cravings! I just ordered a lunch meal for I believe 5$ before tax. Fantastic! As you can see in the picture I had a hard time putting down my spoon to do this review. You get an excellent portion size for the price. The biriyani has layers of flavour with a constant nutty flavour from the perfectly cooked basmati rice. The curried potato on top of the rice adds a salty-savoury umami flavour. The side curries seem small but that is a sufficient amount given the intensity of the flavour. The red curry has a grinded texture from the quantity of spices that were used to create its flavour and the yellow curry is more mild but just as good. I will be back!

Snacks are good. Can definitely work on the sambhar and chutney. Sambhar doesn't have any similarity in taste to how it should be. Red lentil is being used instead of yellow toor dal(probably for economic reason) but taste suffers. Chutney is a dismal look alike of authentic south Indian chutney. Coconut has stale smell, seems to have flour as a filler in it and not sure why color is added? Owner is nice but food might be liked mostly by people who have not had good South Indian food in India. Would not recommend to anyone who has eaten and likes South India food. This doesn't represent that cuisine in taste even remotely.

This place makes terrific samosas. Get the takeout samosa special and only get samosas. All the other fried things like pakoras are dry and bad. The samosas are great.

I have purchased the 20 dollars for 25 samosa/fritter/whatever deal and everything but the samosas are absolutely terrible.

They are dry and impossible to eat without copious amounts of water. They are so dry I suspect you could leave them soaking in sauce and they would never get moist in the center.

Mango/coconut batter ball. Dry. Need a whole cup of water to get through one.

Veggie pakora. Dry. Would probably taste good if there was some moisture to impart the flavour to my tongue and mouth. Smelled like delicious onions. Tasted like a dry paper towel.

The sweet coconut/lentil fritter. Might be good if it wasn't so dry. Could not be easily split into 2 pieces by hand without crumbling.

Methu vadai/lentil and onion fritter. You guessed it. Too dry to even consume without drinking enough water to float a freighter.

There is a theme here. Fried food must be served hot and fresh, not after it has dried out.

Chickpea and onion fritters. These were the absolute worst thing. It was as though someone made a food from seasoned sawdust pressed into a puck. This food has a terrible texture and is so dry you could probably use it as a desiccant.

I have never tried a dosa and some of their other stuff might be good but if you are going to buy anything that is pre prepared DO NOT buy anything but samosas.

I'm leaving 5 star review because I think the samosas are good.

The meal came with 2 containers of sauce. Neither of them do anything to combat the heroic dryness of this food.

Try the samosas. ...

Came here a few weeks ago with a couple of friends. Originally was going to Sugo next door, and since they had a 45min wait, we decided to grab a snack here while waiting.

We ordered 1 order of masala fries, 4 samosas and 4 pakoras (very small order - roughly $18) on which I was asked to tip, and did not. Although I don't need to justify my reasoning, I chose not to tip as I was asked to pay upfront instead of at the end of our service.

We then were served all the items ordered in 1 oval metal dish, with the masala fries arriving in another dish 5 min later, without so much as a napkin on the side, nor any cutlery. My friend went to ask for cutlery, additional plates and napkins and after 10 minutes the lady who took my order came and threw 1 extra plate on the table and muttered under her breath "thanks for the tip, very generous of you" while bringing food items for another table.

We proceeded to eat the food, which for the most part was alright, thanked the lady and left as we got called for our table at Sugo.

After finishing dining at Sugo, we were returning to our car which was parked nearby and ran into the lady standing outside her restaurant who then harassed us again, mentioning "I hope you tipped those other people" - unnecessary, and what honestly prompted me to leave this negative review.

I would have considered returning here and giving it a second chance, and actually tipping if it meant receiving service that wasn't subpar if it wasn't for that second interaction.

I hope you take this feedback and use it to improve your customer service,...

I've been coming to this place for years, especially when it was at the other location. Yesterday I had a bad experience with the owner, I ordered take out boxes because I knew it would be too much food and we only had 10 minutes before my bf had to be back at work so we sat down and waited for our food to be made she asked me if it was to go I said yes because either way I'd be asking for it to go. When the food came we sat to have a couple bites and she comes out and says we can't eat there because we got it to go, I didn't understand why she's so hostile ...she also weirdly kept telling my bf "this is why I asked her!!" Sorry but no that is a horrible way to treat a customer...asking if it's for to go doesn't mean you can't eat there in my head so if you want to say oh we inflate our prices for people to eat here and charge a little less for it to go then say that because I'm not going to read your mind.... After we said we didn't know and we will leave she said "oh you can stay this time" How about no! Don't make us feel like we did something wrong especially when you don't even have table service there. I now understand why this place buries bad reviews and begs people only to write 5 star reviews for them. You've now lost a customer and I won't be back and I'll make sure my friends know too. Treat...
