One of my co-workers recommended this place to me. Aside from the now very over priced Ritz Caribbean at Yonge & Eglinton, there aren't any options to satisfy my jerk/oxtail craving in my neighborhood.
I wasn't expecting anything upscale, but I think the basics is not too much to ask when I'm shelling out $40 to feed 3 people. Things started out badly right away when we walked in & the place had an odd scent. Not stinky or anything, but you could tell it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in awhile. And like so many of my peoples' restaurants the customer service was non existent. No greeting. They looked at me like an alien when I started asking questions about the "red sauce", and half & half options.
I still went ahead & ordered though, my group was getting hangry. The food looked good as they were dishing it out, but then I noticed the coleslaw sitting outside ( not in a refrigerated holder or anything) and the girl using the same utensil used for my chicken to serve coleslaw. I was turned off completely & tempted to just walk out. But I'm too nice for that, so I said thank you, and left a $4 tip.
In terms of flavor there was something about the oxtail that made us all nauseated. The jerk chicken was decent but not spicy at all & a little burnt. My favorite part of the meal was the fried chicken. I was told to get red sauce on everything by my friend, but I only put it on my coleslaw. I regret doing that. By the time we got home & opened the coleslaw it looked nasty. I drained a lot of the liquid before serving it.
There are lots of similar restaurants in the Eglinton West area, so I won't be going back to Mainshas. If you insist on trying it for yourself, get fried chicken & coleslaw,...
Read moreI've been visiting this location for years, I don't live in the neighborhood nor am I Jamaican, I usually visits the neighborhood every 6-8 weeks on every visit I would pop in for take-out mostly jerk chicken, or Oxtail or curry goat & I always request extra gravy, I'm guessing Jamaicans don't use any graves on thier foods or little to none, because I'd always have to make the request specifically or else when I get to my destination the rice would be try & most disappointed... However, on my recent visits including today Saturday July 19th 2025 .. I asked this last there long gold finger nails painting with extensions eyelashes. I ordered Curry Goat I also mentioned to her extra gravy please before went to the backroom to create my order, when she came to give me my order I also mentioned it again & said she only put one spoon & went back to correct my order... When I got home, East of the city I realized she didn't do anything in regards to adding the curry gravy, needless to say it was quite disappointing & I realized each times this has happened to me before it was by the same individual, Not sure what the issue is with this person folleing instructions 💔.... but that was my last visit to your...
