I finally was able to attend UMI's Kitchen after so many attempts by UBER and DoorDash as it always says unavailable. I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by. I thought it was located more east on Dundas but it's actually near Dundas and Sherbourne. Toronto has tried to revive the neighborhood but, it has the same energy. I was lucky as parking is street parking so expect to park and run in to get your order. It looked closed when I got out and the door is not new but, I got in. It isn't a big place but the lady who got my order was pleasant. I ordered a small Oxtail (not cheap no more), side bbq chicken, 1 veggie and 1 beef patty, small chicken soup (good), Pineapple soda. I thought the salad would be handled but no salad like no coleslaw! I was like wow. The food is good. I really enjoyed the veggie patty wish I had gotten three of them. The bbq chicken was nice. Not hot but, it was a great add to my Oxtail meal. I was glad I finally could say I gave this place a try. I am sure others will attend. The area isn't the most desired place to attend but, it's about the food which for this day...
Read moreI don't know what I loved more: the service, the food or the vibe of this place. Walking by I saw the words Halal and Carribean food in one place. My mouth watered. The wonderful woman at the front door I'd smiled at made her way to the food counter and my journey began. Graciously she offered to show me the rice, steamy and cooked to perfection, the grain to legume ratio on point. I couldn't just choose one option and I'm glad I didn't. Halal of course means quality meat and the fold represents this so well. The fried chicken was dynamic. Perfectly spiced, not at all greasy and the absolute finest crisped skin. I took one bite and I was astounded. I gave up on KFC years ago, but this place will definately be my go to from now on. Much less expensive than Popeyes. Do NOT pass on the Oxtail. It somehow manages to remain sinewy and tender at once, melting into a spicy, almost sweet long lasting oral experience. The jerk chicken was my final indulgence, moist, perfectly portioned and brings flavours of Jamaica to your very own mouth as long as you...
Read moreFYI the photos DO NOT reflect the current situation of the restaurant, completely runned down with flies all over the food counter but despite all that out of respect and wanting to promote a family owned business I proceeded to order. I ordered and paid for a large jerk chicken. I received 3 scoops or rice and a quarter chicken with a tiny piece despite being served with no coleslaw, which I asked for. The business partner out of "concern" asks if im given less chicken. I responded YES but nothing was done about it. Also, the large plate as per the menu is 12.99 but I was billed 15.81 !!. Such ingenuine group of people comfortably short changing customers with...
