If you've ever wanted to visit New Orleans in America for its melting pot of French, Spanish and Acadian inspired cuisine, the Upper Beaches Bourbon House in Scarborough is a much shorter drive (for people in the West end, like me) to taste authentic Louisiana cooking. We ordered the Cracker Catfish, which was cooked and seasoned well in a thinly breaded coating for the flaky white fish. The catfish was a generously-sized portion and it came with cheesy grits (a mix between a porridge and mash potatoes consistency but typically made of corn) which were delicious and there was a side of healthy vegetables. The seafood linguine was exceptional! The pasta dish was loaded with shrimp, andouille sausage and had a creamy sauce which was very flavourful and had a pleasant heat kick to it. The presentation of the seafood linguine was certainly insta-worthy too. We also ordered a poutine with blackened chicken (extra charge). The fries were crispy initially but there was quite a bit of gravy (but delicious) so the fries in the middle of the dish were a bit softer after a while of being drenched. That being said, the poutine was still very tasty. The cheese curds were fresh and squeaky and the star of the dish was the blackened chicken that we thankfully added. From what we were told by our pleasant server (restaurant owner's brother), everything is made in house, which includes an incredible hot sauce that starts off sweet but carries extra heat on the back end with a nice burn. We were so full from this delicious meal but would definitely come back for the Po boy sandwiches and the desserts. Overall, the ambience in the restaurant is very relaxed with cool jazz playing in the background. The restaurant is in the same plaza as the Pizza Nova. If you're looking to try something new in the area, this is not your ordinary restaurant. You will be blown away with the delicious food and be going back for more like...
Read moreI actually went to Pizza nova next door and ordered a medium pizza, I was told to come back in 20 minutes. After 20 minutes I went back in to pick up my pizza and was told it was not ready give it some more time, I did. After 15 minutes I went back in again, still not ready. Over one hour later still no pizza I asked what is really going on and was told they did not make the pizza when I first came in and ordered, I was shocked, 10 minutes later they gave me my pizza when I opened the box it was the wrong pizza now they want to gave me another pizza and two drinks but the other pizza is also the wrong pizza. By this time I am hungry and upset, I took the pizzas to leave other people there are asking me if I got them free I said no I paid first when I came in which apparently angered other buyers. Others there were saying to me I should not of had to pay at all since the establishment screwed up my ordered twice. Anyway I left and then got a scolding from my daughter since the pizza was for her who proceeded to tell me I should of gotten them free for what I was put through. I don't know the invisible or underlying rules also I am a nice person and am one who don't like making a scene time have passed and now that I think about it i should of stood up for myself and demanded the food should of been free. Funny thing is I never ordered from this pizza place before only because my daughter was visiting and I had picked her up from the Go Station st Midland and St Clair which is around the corner and she said she is hungry let's grab a pizza. Horrible experience and I simply can't give them...
Read moreChef Sujee is cooking up some delicious Cajun and Creole-inspired meals here, just in time for Mardi Gras... and year 'round, for that matter! We stopped in for a late lunch a couple of weeks ago and were greeted warmly by our waiter, Vachon. The cornbread arrived warm and fresh; my blackened chicken was presented on a bed of fluffy, buttery mash potatoes and respectfully steamed broccoli, French beans and carrots. The lemon beurre was creamy, ample, and delicious. My date tried the blackened catfish, which was tender, flakey, and juicy. He sampled chef Sujee’s homemade hot sauce (secret ingredient is anise – who knew?!). It is a taste sensation that is complex and delicious while still delivering a solid heat punch. The beer on tap was fresh, cold and a perfect accompaniment. The location is the only thing that lacks credibility. The "Beach" is a long way from the St. Clair and Midland address. But Upper Bluffers Park doesn't have much of a ring to it. No matter, if you dig this kind of cuisine, you won't find anything like it since Southern Accent shuttered a while back (formerly in this location, FYI). So, if you have to drive a ways to get here, it's worth it. As for the decor, it's decidedly bohemian French Quarter. Meaning, it ain't fancy. But if you’ve ever been to the Big Easy, this place will give a feeling and food experience that is authentic and satisfying. All that’s missing is...
