Air show weekend - our mediocre experience, lack of attention, charged for pop not ordered, and utter failure to follow up on promises made.
That about summarizes my experience on the Sunday evening after the airshow in Cold Lake. We were a party of five, and sure, they were busy when we arrived. It appeared to us there were plenty of staff on hand to deal with a full house. But - our experience didn't match that expectation.
After being seated, we were promptly ignored until we waved someone down to say we were ready to order - and no one had already come by to take our drink order. So we ordered. And waited, and waited. Again, no attention at all was paid to our table. Once again, after waving down someone and asking about our food, we were advised it would be soon.
Eventually our food arrived, and we dug in. Again, no one stopped by our table to see how we were doing, if we needed anything, or how we liked the food. (My 7oz Sirloin Oscar Lobster - steak was half tough, half fine, and zero visible lobster) And again, we waited for someone to come by and check on us and see if we wanted dessert and/or our bill(s). We had to wave someone down. Then our waiter came by, we paid, and left.
A few days later, I'm checking my bill - and what - there's a $4.29 charge for a pop ($4.29 for a fountain pop? The nerve!). I didn't order a pop. Everything else on my bill was correct. This was too much - so I called the restaurant in the morning on July 23 and spoke with Amanda. I asked for the manager, and she told me she was the manager.
I reviewed the experience with Amanda, provided the check # and server name, and she conceded that there were problems with the kitchen that evening. She also advised it wasn't possible for her to provide a refund for the pop I didn't order (and didn't receive). (What? Might want to re-check your merchant agreement for the use of POS credit card terminal, Mr. Mikes...)
After some back and forth, Amanda offers to send me a $25 GC card that I can use in the Mr. Mikes here in Edmonton. I agree, and Amanda asks for and receives all of my contact info. And then I wait. And wait. It's now three weeks later, and no sign of the promised GC. Amanda’s complete failure to follow-up has made a mediocre experience with an error by a server, into an unacceptable experience.
Mr. Mikes in Bonnyville - my bill (one person), with tip, was $72. For that money, you need to do a LOT better.

Read moreMr. Mikes Steak Casual in Bonnyville, Alberta, turned out to be quite the hidden gem in a town that may have seemed quiet at times. If you were ever looking for a lively atmosphere on a Friday night, this was the place to be. During my three and a half months of travel nursing in Bonnyville, my friends organized a send-off supper for me at Mr. Mikes, and it was a memorable experience.
First and foremost, the restaurant was buzzing with activity, especially on Fridays. It seemed like the entire town had gathered there, creating a vibrant and energetic ambiance. It was the perfect setting for a farewell gathering.
Now, let's talk about the food. The steak at Mr. Mikes was truly outstanding. Cooked to perfection, it was juicy, tender, and full of flavor. Their menu offered a variety of options to suit different tastes, and everyone in our group left with satisfied palates.
What made this experience even more special was the exceptional service. The staff at Mr. Mikes were attentive, friendly, and accommodating. They made sure our group had everything we needed for a great evening, and their hospitality was much appreciated.
In summary, Mr. Mikes Steak Casual provided the perfect backdrop for my send-off supper after my travel nursing assignment in Bonnyville. It was a lively place, the food was delicious, and the service was top-notch. If you're ever in town on a Friday night and looking for a good time with great food, Mr. Mikes is the...
Read moreWe were part of a large group. We preordered our meals which was a great idea but they weren't ready for our reservation on time. When we sat down (at barely cleaned tables) the food started coming out. Problem was most of our group didn't have drinks or cutlery. Hot food sat infront of us while we waited. The meal was pretty good even after waiting 10 minutes for cutlery. We were told there would be a 10% group discount but when the bills arrived it wasn't applied. Had everything been better I wouldn't have said anything but this time I did. The manager came over and honoured the discount after informing us that it only applied to a group bill and not bills grouped by family - this wasn't specified anywhere. I wanted to educated him about the proper sequence of service but we just wanted to leave. Red Deer Mr Mikes was even worse. At least this meal was hot when it arrived. Please don't take group reservations if you lack the training/experience in executing them. There would have been at least a second round of drinks and dessert if the service had...
