I had the pleasure of visiting Batard Boulangerie today, and the experience transported me straight to a quaint French café—authentic even amidst Vancouver’s modern charm. Few places can deliver this kind of atmosphere, and Batard absolutely nails it.
I ordered an Americano, which was beautifully crafted with a thin, delicate crema that lingered on top which probably is coming from the oil of the freshly roasted coffee. The aroma was robust yet balanced, a true hallmark of expertly roasted beans. It was smooth, with no bitterness, making each sip incredibly enjoyable.
To complement the coffee, I tried the Apricot Vanilla Galette. Its crispy, buttery layers were perfectly baked, and the balance between the tangy apricot and subtle vanilla sweetness made it a treat worth savoring.
I also took home a Salmon Coulibiac, which was phenomenal. The sockeye salmon, paired with mushroom ragout and a hard-boiled egg, was all wrapped in a golden croissant dough—a dish both indulgent and satisfying. Every bite felt like a harmonious blend of textures and flavors.
I first got to know Batard because a friend gifted us a box of their pastries. While I initially found those selections too sweet for my palette, today I was delighted to discover a wide variety of offerings, catering to different tastes. The exterior of the boulangerie was so inviting, like stepping into Paris, and I’m thrilled I gave it another chance.
There’s so much more to explore here, and I’m already planning my next visit to try more of their unique creations since I pass through Fraser every time I’m on my way to work. Batard is a gem for anyone who appreciates fine pastry and...
Read moreI’ve heard many great things about this bakery and finally managed to visit. Upon entering, I was surprised to see how many consumer goods they sell - it’s a mix of their own products, local venders and specialty items. I came around Sunday noon and the place was pretty packed, but the line-up moved relatively quickly.
We dropped by for a quick snack - we ordered the raspberry cheesecake danish and the cheese tomato galette. Honestly, they were both great. The danish was flakey and buttery as it should be, yet the cheesecake part wasn’t overwhelmingly heavy or sweet. It had a mild creamy taste, where most danishes I have typically use custard. The fresh raspberries made it a bit more refreshing as well. It’s definitely a light treat for someone who doesn’t pastries that are indulgent, rich and too sweet, similar to myself. As for the galette, the dough was much simpler and the tomato was the game changer. Without it, it’s an average cheese bun (lack of a better word), however the slice of tomato that was baked in it made it similar to a grilled cheese with tomato soup in bun form - a great combo.
Overall, I had a great experience here and would definitely come back to try their brunch and coffee. I can definitely see why this...
Read moreFrench bakery cafe and gourmet market, very nicely decorated. Although I've never been to France, the atmosphere felt authentic to me. There's a decent amount of seating inside and it was still packed while I was there, about 2:30-3:30 on a Saturday. There are a few tables outside, which are under an awning but don't quite give you total coverage in the rain, so not ideal if it's raining... but I sat out there anyway because I was determined to eat there and didn't have a plan B, and didn't really mind getting a little wet. I got an eggplant parm croissant, a slice of pumpkin espresso bundt cake, and an iced ginger green tea. The croissant had buttery flavour but wasn't greasy to the touch, beautiful flaky layers, and the eggplant filling was delicious. The cake slice was huge - I cut it in half and took half home, but it was so good and not too heavy, I probably could've just eaten the whole thing if I hadn't put that second half away before I started. The flavour was perfect. The iced tea was also nice and refreshing. The 2 pastries and tea came out to about $15, around $5 each, which I thought was a great price for this because it was all top quality and as mentioned the slice of cake was fully...
